Math
We use the Everyday Math curriculum at Memorial Spaulding.
We also use the Kathy Richardson program to enhance number sense.
This year, as we prepare for the changing of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, to the Common Core, we will be changing some of the lessons for the Everyday Math, and adding in additional lessons or mini units that focus on different math skills needed for 2nd grade. These activities encourage more math conversations, sharing ideas between students, and explanations of their solving (right or not) so I can understand what their math thinking is and to build it or enhance it.
Students will focus on:
* making sense of problems and working through them, asking themselves, "Does this make sense?"
* reasoning abstractly and quantitatively (reason with symbols and use different operations or objects)
* making mathematical arguments to explain their logical thinking using objects, drawings, actions, etc.
* problem solving by choosing appropriate method to solve both mentally and on paper
* recognizing need for standard units of measure
*describing and analyzing shapes by sides and angles & begin to develop foundation for area and volume
Topics spiral throughout the year so students are exposed to concepts, later they practice, and practice again.
Topics include:
* Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction within 100
*Adding and subtract quickly and automatically within 20
* Work with equal groups of objects to gain basis for multiplication
* Understanding place value and understanding of place value for operations of subtraction and addition
* Measure and estimate lengths in standard units
* Relate addition and subtraction to length
* Work with time and money
* Represent and interpret data
* Reason with shapes and attributes
* Challenge and small group work to review or reteach concepts or enhance what students already know
We also focus not only on the rote memorization or how to do get the answer, but why the answer is correct. For example 5+6=11 is correct but 5+6=20 must be wrong because their building number sense says it's too high. Memorizing rules and facts is the one step to being a good mathematician...the next is working on solving the problems in many ways and being able to show how they came to their answer.
