Underwood Art Program
Grades K, 1, 2, 4, and 5

All Children are encouraged to experiment with a a wide range
of media in drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, clay, weaving,
collage, three-dimensional design and construction.

Introduction to the elements of design (line, from, space, color,
texture) is the conceptual basis of every activity.

Children are encouraged to learn to look carefully, to express
themselves visually and to become sensitive to the natural environment as
they work from observation, memory, and imagination.  Art projects are
often integrated with the classroom curriculum, when appropriate.

The history of art, past and present, is introduced through
varied visual materials.  Students begin to develop vocabulary with which
to communicate about art.  Through classroom discussions, children learn
to value their own art and to respect the work of classmates.

Ways You Can Encourage and Support Your Child's Art Education

Ask your child about what is going on in their art class!!!!

Show interest in their artwork!! When they bring home artwork, ask them  "Tell me about  your  picture? ".  The way we phrase something is important to children.  If you say "What is that?"  You might hurt the artist's feelings.

Display your child's artwork!!!  This is a great self-esteem booster!!  ( My parents framed one of my paintings when I was 3 yrs. old.  It still sits in the living room and they won't part with it.  I think this encouragement was a big factor in my choosing to be an Art Teacher.)

Create a safe place to store your child's artwork.  They will enjoy looking back at it as they grow older!  It also helps them to see progress!

Create an "Art Space " for them, providing opportunities to explore various art materials. Supply them with paper, glue, scissors, markers, crayons, paint, beads, recycled cartons or objects for 3-D sculpture, modeling clay, craft items, yarn and popsicle sticks etc.

Start an "Art Library" at home!!!  There are many great books on different artists.  The "Getting to Know The World's Greatest Artists" series by Mike Venezia is wonderful and age appropriate.  You could read them together!
The "Arts and Activities for Kids" books by Kim Solga have great  suggestions for various art projects that you could do with your child!!  Another great book, "Gifts Kids Can Make" by Shelia McGraw.  Both these books have step by step photo illustrations.   The "Klutz" books are also wonderful and most have little kits that come with them to supply the materials needed for the projects.

Another great resource for parents "Recipes for Art and Craft Materials" By Helen Roney Sattler.  This book provides recipes for making glues and pastes, modeling clay, papier-mache, and finger paint  etc.

Visit the Library and check out books on artists or  "How To" books on different types of art projects.

They are also a lot of games and puzzles that have to do with art.  "Art Lotto", an art bingo type of game by the National Gallery of Art, Washington is great. Or "Where Art Thou? an art memory type game that is fun for all.

Take a family trip to a local museum!! There are many fabulous museums in the area.  Many have kid friendly exhibits or programs.

Have your child take additional art classes at a local museum or art center.  Take a class TOGETHER!!   Try something new!!Take a pottery class!!

Make or purchase a sketch book for your child. Bring it with you on visits to  museums or family vacations. Have your child sketch the scenes that they like.

Enjoy!!
