3/20/12 Happy first day of Spring! As we finish up our last week of our senses we are really exploring the world around us. Yesterday we wrote in our journals about how we use our senses on the playground. Today we made binoculars. (Thank you to everyone who donated toilet paper/paper towel rolls). The children watercolor painted their own set of binoculars.
Then we made a list of things we wanted to see outside using the binoculars. As we found each item, we checked them off our list. See our completed list hanging on the door to our classroom.
Week of 3/12 We had another busy week learning about our senses. Some highlights from our week were sorting things we taste and things we hear. We also had fun using our sense of touch and smell to play with shaving cream. We made flowers using paper, cupcake tins, buttons, beads, and pipe cleaners. Come in and check out our garden and see which flower you like the smell of best! (They really smell!) On Friday we made a "sensory hand." We discussed the way things feel. The three we focused on were soft, bumpy and smooth. Here are some pictures of the past week.

Week of 3/5 We started our 5 Senses unit this week. The children have been very interested in discussing which senses we are using when. On Monday we made our very own 5 Senses placemat. We talked about what parts of our bodies we use to see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. We also made a 5 Senses book where we had to draw on the part of our body that goes with the sense. This children enjoyed finger painting and story acting. We acted out "The Three Little Pigs." We started a list of ways we use our 5 Senses on the playground.

2/28/12 With our continuation of Dr. Seuss week, we read "Oh the Thinks you and Think." Then we thought of our favorite places that we like to go with our family. Each child wrote a "journal entry" of their favorite place, by drawing a picture and then writing about it. The children were very excited to discuss Dr. Seuss' birthday on Friday. While they would like to bake and eat a real birthday cake, we have decided to settle for making a pretend cake for him. Stay tuned!
2/27/12 I hope everyone had a restful and fun vacation. The children were excited to be back at school and sharing their stories of vacation. We are having a Dr. Seuss themed week in Rm. 114 in honor of the author's birthday! Today we made read 1 Fish 2 Fish Red Fish Blue Fish and made fishbowl placemats. The children were asked to identify the number in the fish bowl and count out the right amount of fish to put in there. The children enjoyed trying to create a pattern or matching up the right amounts. Here are some pictures of them in action:
Week of 1/30/12 We had a busy week learning about Penguins. On Monday we discussed things we knew about Penguins--which was quite a bit! We read Penguins! by Gail Gibbons. We learned that Penguins are birds that do not fly but swim.
On Tuesday, we measured our three life sized Penguins: The Emperor Penguin, The Macaroni Penguin, and the Little Blue Penguin. We used blocks, markers, and our feet to see how big each penguin is. We learned that the Emperor Penguin is the largest and Little Blue is the smallest. We also found out that only the teacher's are taller than The Emperor Penguin.
On Wednesday, we did a science experiment. We learned that Penguins have two layers of feathers: a waterproof layer and a layer to keep them warm in the icey cold weather. First we felt ice water with one later of feathers (a ziplock bag). Then we put our hands in a "blubber bag" (bag willed with crisco--don't worry parents the children did not touch the crisco). We found that our hands were warmer with both layers.
Thursday we had wake up hands with Cari and made a cut and snip penguin at table top.
Friday was our big Superbowl Spirit Day! We had a great time making footballs in Melissa's room, making flags in our classroom, and playing football inspired games in Katie's class. Then we had a whole-school parade around the Ed center. It was fun!
