Newton School Committee
About the Newton School Committee
The Newton School Committee -- different from the Cabot School Council--establishes standards and budget for the entire Newton Public School System. Members are elected to their positions, and represent a “ward,” whereas the Cabot School Council serves the only Cabot community and acts as a liaison to the Newton School Committee on behalf of the Cabot community. As the Committee’s website explains, “The School Committee consists of nine voting members: one elected (citywide) from each of Newton's eight wards, and the Mayor as an ex-officio member.  The Superintendent of Schools sits at the School Committee meeting table but is not a member of the Committee and has no vote.  Four non-voting student representatives, two from each high school, take turns attending regular meetings and are encouraged to participate in discussions.”

The Newton School Committee collects, reviews and approves the School Improvement Plans of Newton Public Schools. Members include
- Gail Glick, Ward 1
- Reenie Murphy, Ward 2 (Cabot’s School Committee Representative)
- Anne Larner, Ward 3 (Attended the Cabot State of the School Address)
- Jonathan Yeo, Ward 4
- Susan Heyman, Ward 5
- Claire Sokoloff, Ward 6
- Marc Laredo, Ward 7
- Dori Zaleznik, Ward 8 and Chairperson of the Newton School Committee
- Mayor David Cohen
