November Meeting Summary

At this month’s Bowen School Council meeting we continued our discussion about conducting a community survey to gather more information about families’ experiences at and beliefs about Bowen.  Below is a brief summary of the November School Council meeting agenda items, including:

Family Survey
The School Council reviewed a second draft of a family survey and updated some of the statements, in hopes to clarify the main idea of each statement, as well as an overall rating about Bowen.  A final version of the survey was completed later in the week by a smaller group of School Council members.  The survey will be shared with current families electronically and by paper starting on November 12. Families who graduated Bowen last year will also be invited to participate in the survey.  The Bowen School Council is also hoping to translate the survey into other languages, as needed, to encourage as many families as possible to share their thoughts.  Please contact us if you are available to translate the document.

The survey will be accompanied with a letter that will describe the purpose, timeline of implementation, and plan for dissemination of survey results.  Please be on the look out for this information.

Other Topics
Other topics that were briefly discussed at the closing of the meeting included the updated playground rules and the guardian/teacher conference schedule.  Highlights from those discussions include:

  • Playground Rules:  These rules will continue to be reviewed and revised as our playground is updated in the upcoming year.  Our goal is to keep the playground fun and safe while being properly supervised during the school day.  We also understand that children need time to explore new equipment in order to learn how to use it appropriately.
  • Guardian/Teacher Conference Schedule:  Conference dates are designated by the district and have been identified for the year.  Spring conferences will be held March 11 – March 24.  Families are encouraged to mark their calendars and teachers will be asked to post the conference schedule as far in advance as possible in order to allow families to plan accordingly.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be January 6, 2015, 7:30 - 8:20 a.m. in Diana's office.  Please note that the December meeting has been canceled, in order to provide time for the School Council to interpret the survey feedback.  At the January meeting, the School Council will present a summary of what was learned from the survey and begin discussing next steps based on the results.  This information will also be shared in the monthly summary and available to all families.  We invite and encourage you to attend this meeting.  If you are unable to attend this meeting please keep yourself informed by reading the School Council Meeting Summary, which will be posted after each meeting.

The School Council will meet monthly from 7:30 - 8:20 a.m. in Diana's office.  Please mark your calendar with the upcoming meeting dates.  We hope you will join us!
