Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
June 14, 2019
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear Bowen Families,
This is the last weekly update of the school year.  This has been a wonderful year of learning and community building.  It was so nice to welcome so many families into the school over June to celebrate the efforts and successes of our students.  I appreciate all of your support throughout the year and I know that our success is a result of our home/school collaboration!  Thank you for all of your support and  everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Have a wonderful summer, I look forward to seeing you next school year!
Yours truly,
Diana
News You Need to Know

Please Donate to the Food Drive!
The 5th grade student council is sponsoring our annual summer food drive next week!  During the summer months, the Newton food pantry is understocked as it provides for families who are home for the summer.  Please consider donating food such as snacks, cereal, cookies, pasta, rice, canned foods, and much more.  Donations will be collected in the lobby.  We thank you for your cooperation and donation!

Last Day of School is June 18!
Tuesday, June 18 is a half-day of school, with dismissal at 12:00 p.m.  We look forward to wishing everyone a happy start to summer break at that time!

Lost Anything?
Please check out our lost and found in the lobby for any missing items.  All remaining items will be donated after the last day of school.

Sharing Progress Reports with Families
Progress Reports will now be shared with families on Monday, June 17 in order to provide the appropriate IT support for families.

Summer Reading Suggestions for Adults
This month the Bowen Staff engaged in books discussions that complimented our year long professional practice goal to explore the complexity of identity and identity development, with a focus on race, as we continue to foster a welcoming and inclusive school community for staff, students and their families.  I  would like to share the book choices with you if you are looking for summer reading suggestions.  Please note that most of these books are written for an adult audience.  The book recommendations are:
  • Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah, autobiography
  • George by Alex Gino, realistic fiction (recommended age 4th grade and up)
  • There There by Tommy Orange, fiction
  • Turning Japanese by MariNaomi, memoir/graphic novel
  • We hope you enjoy these books as much as we did!
  •
  • Food Service Advisory Group
  • Our PTO leadership is partnering with NPS administration and the School Committee to form a Food Service Advisory Group (FSAG).  The purpose of this group is to create a two-way dialogue between families and NPS food service partner,Whitsons Culinary Group, so that food service in the Newton Public Schools meets expectations and can be continuously improved. The group will be comprised of family representatives from each school, a School Committee representative, and a Whitson’s representative.  Representatives from FSAG will periodically meet with NPS staff and Whitson’s staff to share feedback gathered by the school representatives.
