Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
June 7, 2019
Dear Bowen Families,
It’s the final countdown, only 7 more school days left for students until summer!  I am looking forward to the final days of the school year as we continue to celebrate the year.  This week we also celebrated our community with a fun Color Day and a wonderful 4th grade spring concert.  Both events highlighted our community’s strengths and values.  Thank you for all of your support and  everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Have a wonderful weekend, see you on Monday!
Yours truly,
News You Need to Know
Please Donate to the Food Drive!
The 5th grade student council is sponsoring our annual summer food drive next week!  During the summer months, the Newton food pantry is understocked as it provides for families who are home for the summer.  Please consider donating food such as snacks, cereal, cookies, pasta, rice, canned foods, and much more.  Donations will be collected in the lobby.  We thank you for your cooperation and donation!
Crossing Guard and Bus Driver Appreciation, June 14
On Friday, June 14, we will show our crossing guards and bus drivers how much we appreciate their help getting to school safely. Please make a thank you note and give it on your way to school on Friday, June 14th to to any of the following people who help you get to school safely: Roman Baran in front of the school, Lorin Amendola at Cypress and Jackson, Ellen Fiore at Langley Path and/or Susan Barish at Parker and Daniel. Or, perhaps you take the bus with: Ben, Bob Vanaria and Monique Houston.  Your note can be simple: "Thanks for helping me get to school safely!"  They will appreciate it so much!
This is Susan Barish's last year as a Crossing Guard, after 28 years on the job and 21 years on Parker and Daniel! Let's give her an extra thank you!
Sharing Progress Reports with Families
Progress Reports will now be shared with families on Monday, June 17 in order to provide the appropriate IT support for families.
Last Day of School is June 18!
Tuesday, June 18 is a half-day of school, with dismissal at 12:00 p.m.  We look forward to wishing everyone a happy start to summer break at that time!
Staffing Updates
With the end of each school year quickly approaching, we find ourselves bidding farewell to some of our Bowen staff as they move on to new and exciting endeavors both within and outside of Newton.  We wish each and every one of these valued community members the very best!  Thank you to Marline Anderson, Cara Bergantino, Laura Brennan, Lydia Gold, Clarissa Henson, Jenna Hogan, Rachel Kelly, Juliette Lloyd, Maggie Munnelly, Tobias Pemsler, Jenn Sullivan and Amanda Welch.  Your contributions were always appreciated at Bowen!

Additional Staffing Changes
We are also excited for Caryn Chapler and Shelli Adam, both are changing their role at Bowen.  Caryn Chapler is joining the ELL team as an ESL teacher and Shelli Adam is joining the office team as the building aide.
Bowen Legacy Scholarship Update
I would like to thank the 5th graders and their families for raising money for the Bowen Legacy Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded to a graduating Newton South High School senior, who is a Bowen alumni, selected by the NSHS scholarship committee.  In addition to being a Bowen alumni, each recipient returns to Bowen in June to speak with members of the graduating class.  The scholarship would not be possible without the support of 5th grade volunteers and our school community.  Thank you for helping the 5th grade students “pay it forward.”
Are You Moving Before September?
As we started the placement process for the upcoming school year, there have been some conversations that students have shared with teachers about potentially moving before the next school year.  If you are planning to move out of the Bowen district prior to September 2019, please inform the office and the classroom teacher as soon as possible.  This will help us gather the required information to share with the new school as well as help us to create more accurate class placements for the upcoming school year.
