Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
January 25, 2019

Dear Bowen Families,
Even though the snow is quickly melting from last weekend’s storm, it is a good reminder for us that winter is here… which means we have to plan for the impact of snow during arrival and dismissal time.  This is not an easy task as each family must determine what is the safest way to and from school… it will vary from walking to driving.  No matter how you travel to and from school,  you need to plan extra time, be careful and be patient.  If you use the Blue Zone or travel on Cypress street,  it is recommended that you continue to travel toward Parker Street to eliminate the gridlock that was created on Tuesday.  Do not park on both sides of Cypress Street and do not make illegal U turns.  Please follow the directions of our crossing guards and staff as we try to help our students arrive and depart from school safely.  Thank you for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy the long weekend, stay warm and enjoy the snow, see you next week!
Yours truly,

Progress Reports and Spring Conferences
On Thursday, January 31st, student progress reports will be posted on Parent Connect.  Please be sure to download the document and review the progress your child has made so far.  If you are having trouble logging on, please email aspen@newton.k12.ma.us directly.  The information shared on your child’s progress report will be helpful for you as you prepare for the upcoming Parent/Teacher conference.  The spring conference period will begin on March 18th.
Sports Fan Day
Next Friday, February 1, we will have a schoolwide Sports Fan day.  Students and staff are welcomed to wear their favorite sports team gear to school.  I know I will be wearing my New England Patriots gear as I prepare to cheer them on in the Superbowl.

  • Bowen School Council January Update
  • School Council kicked off the new year reviewing our community goal and reviewing the annual family survey data.  During the year, the Bowen School Council will continue to work towards “creatively engaging families in school initiatives to increase involvement, connectedness and support.”  We also reviewed the annual family survey (see attached PowerPoint  Annual Family Survey ).  Families identified strengths of Bowen to include the following categories or themes: community, teachers and staff, diversity, and families.  Bowen families also shared improvement suggestions, including the following categories or themes:  facilities (paint, playground, grounds, bathrooms), lunch (length of time to eat, food quality), parking, teacher consistency (expectations, homework, communication), academics (challenge, math curriculum), language, increase parent volunteers and volunteering opportunities, and more specialist’s time.  Some of this feedback will be integrated in our work as a school council, and other feedback will be shared with the district.
  • Bowen School Council meetings are always open to the community and we hope you will consider attending our meetings this year.  Our meetings will be March 1 @ 7:30 a.m., April 12 @ 7:30 a.m. and May 17 @ 7:30 a.m.
