Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
November 30, 2018

Dear Bowen Families,
Welcome back!  We hope you enjoyed the long weekend with family and friends.  Students and staff have quickly readjusted back into the school routine and learning has continued.  Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy the weekend, see you next week!
Yours truly,

Village Bank Holiday Gift Drive
Looking for a way to brighten up a child’s holiday season?  The 5th grade student council is collecting gifts to be donated to the Village Bank Holiday Gift Drive.  Gifts for children ages newborn to 10 will be collected to distribute to Newton families this holiday season.  New, unwrapped toys or gift cards are greatly appreciated!  Donations will be accepted at Bowen in the main lobby until Monday, December 10th.  Gifts can also be dropped off at any Village Bank Newton location.  Thanks in advance for your generosity!

Planning a Trip?
As you plan upcoming family trips, please be sure to let the classroom teacher and office know if your child(ren) will be missing school.  We want to ensure that students are in school as much as possible and understand there are circumstances that make perfect attendance challenging.  Please remember that “lengthy absences for extended trips are strongly discouraged by the Newton Public Schools, as teachers cannot provide advance assignments or study aides a child would need over long periods of time to maintain the pace of learning in the classroom.” (NPS, Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook, 2018 - 2019, p. 6)

Preparing for the Winter Weather
As winter approaches, we want to remind families of how you can help us keep our children safe and warm.  We value and love our time outside during recess, especially when there is snow.  In order to do so, it is important that children are dressed appropriately.  Jackets, hats, gloves/mittens, snowpants, and boots are strongly recommended for all students.  We are happy to assist families who might need support providing this winter attire, so please let us know.  It is also helpful to label your winter gear so it can get returned to the right student.  We would also like to remind you that the building does not open until 8:20 a.m.  This is a district-wide policy.  Be sure that students are prepared to stay warm if they will be waiting outside for the building to open.

MCAS Testing Schedule
While springtime seems a little far away at the moment, we wanted everyone to have the dates for MCAS testing in grades 3, 4, and 5 well in advance.  Our testing window was determined by the District to ensure that each school will have the appropriate IT support.  We understand that some absences are unavoidable, but we do ask that everyone be mindful of the testing dates when making appointments, etc.  Testing will be computer-based for all grades.  We know that this impacts some of our CAS Programs and Community Blocks, we hope that you will collaborate with us to accommodate the MCAS Schedule.
