Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
November 2, 2018
Dear Bowen Families,
Over the past two weeks there have been many acts of hate throughout our country, including the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue where 11 Jewish people were killed in an act of anti-semitism, and the shooting in Jeffersontown, Kentucky where two  Black people were killed in an act of racism.  Many of us may be struggling with a range of feelings including fear, sadness, and anxiety while processing these events.  Although I do not know how to make sense of these acts, I hope that as a community we can stand together in the face of hatred.  At Bowen we strive to create and foster a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment for our children, staff and families.  As we move forward, I invite our community to reflect on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Yours truly,

Thank You Volunteers!
Over the past week we have enjoyed the help of so many votuneers during PTO and classroom celebrations.  Your time and support is appreciated by all of us!
Still Collecting Trick or Treat for UNICEF
Trick or Treat for UNICEF boxes should be brought to school by Monday.  The 5th grade student council will be counting the donations next week.  They hope to raise $800 this year and celebrate with a school wide spirit day, pajama day next week.  We will let you know how much Bowen collected in next week’s weekly blast.
Still Collecting Candy
Bowen is participating in the Wellesley Dental Group's Annual Community Candy Drive to benefit the U.S. Troops serving overseas.  Please have your children drop off unwanted or excess candy in the front lobby on Monday.
Private School Applications
We understand that families are already thinking about placement for next year, including pursuing private school options.  While we would love for families to continue in the Newton Public Schools, we also understand how thoughtful families are when considering whether to enroll their children in private school.  Most of our requests apply specifically to transitioning from elementary school to middle school.  We are asking that families reach out to the office and the homeroom teachers as soon as they know they plan to submit applications to private schools.  Providing advance notice to the school will allow us time to organize application materials and student records, as well as complete thoughtful personalized recommendations. All completed applications will be sent in one transmission directly from the Bowen office. Application materials are not returned directly to families.
