Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
October 19, 2018

Dear Bowen Families,
Fall is here!  The temperature is dropping and the leaves are changing colors.  As the weather and wardrobes change, please be sure to label clothing, including jackets and sweatshirts.  This will help us return lost items.  This week was an exciting week at school; including the Creative Arts and Sciences program: Voci Angelica Trio, 3rd grade timeline viewing, all school assembly and several field trips.  We appreciate all of your support to ensure that programs and events like this are successful!  Enjoy the weekend, see you on Monday!
Yours truly,

Weekly News

October’s School Assembly
This month’s school assembly was hosted by 5th grade.  They shared a video they created that reinforced our school expectations (BE Kind, BE Safe, BE, Respectful, and BE Engaged) and how it looks when at recess.  Please check in with your child about how they can be kind, safe, respectful and engaged during recess.

Building Security Reminder
Please remember that it is our district’s policy to keep our doors locked during the school day for security reasons, with the exception of morning arrival when staff members greet students at the front door.  If you need to visit Bowen during the school day,  please remember that you must check in at the office at all times.  A staff member will greet you and ask how they can assist you.  All visitors, other than those dismissing a student early, must sign in at the main office and wear a visitor badge in the building.

MCAS Parent/Guardian Reports
This week the district mailed home MCAS Parent/Guardian Reports for all students who took the 2018 Spring MCAS.  Families should receive individual reports by early next week.  We would like to invite families for an informational discussion about Bowen’s overall performance last spring and an overview of how to interpret the information on your child’s report.  We will host a meeting on Thursday, October 25th from 8:00 - 8:45 a.m. in the staff lounge.  If you need to bring your child at this time, your child will join morning care from 8:00 - 8:20 a.m. in the cafeteria.

Elementary Progress Conferences
I hope you have signed up for an upcoming fall conference.  In last week’s email I shared how conferences are a key opportunity to build and strengthen home-school connections!  Conferences are a time to:
  • Build relationships and trust up front.
  • Clarify learning outcomes.
  • Listen.
  • Involve students.
  • Centre Street Food Pantry - Weekend Food for Families!
  • Our local food pantry offers weekend food program for students and families called Fuel.  The Fuel program provides local students and their families with a weekend’s worth of easy-to-prepare healthy meals.  It is a free program for eligible families.  If this supplemental food program could help your family, please contact me or our school social worker stephanie_baumann@newton.k12.ma.us
