Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
October 12, 2018
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Bowen Families,
Even though it was a short week, there was still plenty of time for learning, even for the teachers!  During our monthly staff meeting we previewed more than 60 new library books that reflect diverse characters.  Teachers shared ideas of how they will use these books with students and will continue to work with Ms. Riordan, our school librarian, to expand our book collections in the library and in classrooms. Thank you for all of your support to ensure that Bowen is a wonderful community!  Enjoy the weekend, see you on Monday!
Yours truly,
Diana

Weekly News
Please Complete the Bowen Family Survey
I would like to thank those families who have completed our annual family survey.  I hopeful that many more families will take a few minutes to complete the survey this weekend.  The survey will close next week.  It is important for us to hear from you about what is working well at Bowen, areas to improve, and additional thoughts you have about your family’s experience at school.
The survey can be found at the following link:
If you choose to complete the paper copy of the survey, please return it to the office. PDF Family Survey  Once the survey is complete and data has been collected, the survey will be analyzed by the Bowen School Council and PTO.  These findings will then be shared with the school community.
We look forward to using this valuable feedback to continue to help us grow and learn!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.  Thank you!

Elementary Progress Conferences
The window for fall conferences is almost upon us, and we know that most classrooms have been busily scheduling meeting times to share information about how the beginning of the school year is going.  If you have not yet scheduled a time with your child’s teacher, please do so, as conferences are a key opportunity to build and strengthen home-school connections!  Here are a few thoughts about conferences shared in an “Education Update” article:
  • Build relationships and trust up front.  The conference should not be the first point of contact between the school and your family.  If there are questions or concerns about academic or social issues, do not wait until the conference to bring them up.  Phone calls and e-mail help lay the groundwork for productive conversations at the face-to-face conference.
  • Clarify learning outcomes. While the conference is not a time to process the entire year’s learning standards, all families should have access to and understanding of the grade-level curriculum expectations.  This provides a better understanding of how your child will learn and grow over the course of the school year.
  • Listen. Both parents/guardians and teachers should have the opportunity to share their thoughts about who the child is as a learner and any concerns they may have at this point.  It is crucial that everyone take the time to hear what the other person is saying in order to better understand and help the child have a successful year.
  • Involve students. Talk with your child about their perspective on the start of the school year!  How do they feel things are going, both academically and socially?  What are their goals and challenges?  This will help to better inform the conversation.
