Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
September 14, 2018

Dear Bowen Families,
It was nice to see so many families at this week’s Back to School Night.  I hope you found the classroom visits and grade level presentations both informative and enjoyable.  Our partnership with you helps our children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy your weekend!  I look forward to seeing you next week at the PTO Back to School Picnic.
Yours truly,

PTO Open Meeting, Friday, September 21 at 8:30 a.m.
The Bowen PTO would like to invite all parents and guardians to an open meeting on Friday, September 21st at 8:30 a.m. in the staff room.  During this meeting, we will elect new PTO co-chairs and board members, review and vote on the proposed 2018/19 budget, and preview upcoming fall events.  Despite our big agenda, we hope to keep this meeting brief. Please feel free to attend for as long as you are able.  Nominees for PTO Co-Chairs are Diane Gomez, Allison Behr, Jessica Brooks, Michelle Tsay and current PTO Treasurer John Fox.  Non-voting PTO board nominees are Eileen Dibb (representing Understanding our Differences) and Lisa Butts (representing Creative Arts + Sciences).  All parents and guardians are automatically members of the PTO and are warmly encouraged to participate in the open meeting. If you have any questions, please email

Join us for Cocktails and CAS on Monday, 9/24, 8:00pm
Looking for a fun and not-too-stressful way to contribute to the Bowen community? Consider becoming part of the Creative Arts + Sciences Committee (CAS)!
CAS brings top notch, curriculum-related programs on a wide variety of subjects to Bowen’s classrooms. Through CAS programming, students get to meet best-selling authors, conduct hands-on science experiments, explore American history, apply mathematical concepts and experience a broad range of cultures through dance, music, storytelling—and so much more. CAS volunteers love seeing the look on kids’ faces when a live owl (silently!) flaps its wing right in front of them, when they crawl inside a portable planetarium in the Bowen gym, or when a famous author shows them a story she wrote in in 4th grade. If you are able to come to school occasionally, it’s a great way to spend time in the classroom and get to know your child’s teacher and classmates. Planning these programs is easy, and can be done on a flexible schedule from home throughout the course of the school year.
CAS is currently looking a new volunteers. Co-Chairs Lisa Butts (mom of Adam, 4th grade) and Daniela Alvarez-Bradley (mom of Lucia, 2nd grade, Owen, 4th grade) would love to tell you more about it. Parents are invited to a relaxed evening of "Cocktails and CAS" on Monday, 9/24 at 8:00pm.  If you can't make the event, Daniela and Lisa would be happy to set up a another time to speak with you.  Please email for the address and details.  CAS is funded entirely by donations to the Bowen PTO--thank you!
Calling All Library Volunteers
Volunteering in the Bowen library is a unique opportunity to spend time with your child's class on a regular basis. Each year, a small army of dedicated volunteers will work with our librarian, Ms. Riordan, to allow the Bowen library to maintain the largest book circulation among all the NPS elementary schools!  Most of the work is restocking books and helping kids check out books.  It's a great way to get to know the other children in your child's class and you'll get a huge smile from your child when they see you there.  A consistent commitment of one to four visits each month is appreciated and usually attainable with multiple volunteers per class.
Please mark your calendar for a Library Volunteer Training Session on Wednesday, September 26th  at 8:40 a.m. in the library. If you cannot attend this meeting, Maureen will work with you to make sure you're up to speed when you start volunteering.
