Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
August 31, 2018
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Bowen Families,

It was wonderful to see so many returning and new Bowen families yesterday morning as students visited their new classrooms.  I was smiling all morning as I greeted students and enjoyed listening to their summer stories.  Yesterday just confirmed how excited I am for the new year… so excited I decided to start the weekly family updates early! The goal of this communication is to give you a quick overview of relevant community information and to share upcoming news and events.  I hope you find this to be informative and helpful.  I want to hold onto the last few summer days so I am going to keep this update as brief as possible.  Enjoy the long summer weekend!
Yours truly,
Diana

Weekly News
Morning Arrival Review
As we kick off the school year, we would like to review Bowen’s arrival routine.  Our arrival routine is aligned with the district-wide drop-off procedure which has families dropping off students outside of each elementary school.  This helps us maintain school security, foster student independence and start instruction on time.  Please review our routine before the first day of school:
Arrival
September 4 - 7:
All families, K-5, are welcome to walk children into the building and to their classrooms.  This will allow students and families to transition into the new school year and practice the arrival routine.  There will also be a number of Bowen Staff in the front of the building and in the lobby to greet students and families.  Many students already feel comfortable with the morning arrival routine and may head directly to class without family.  Students are welcome during the first week of school to walk to class alone if they feel comfortable.

2nd -5th* grade teachers will also practice the morning arrival routine with students during this week in order to prepare students to be ready for the independent arrival routine which begins September 11.

*Please note 5th graders are welcome to enter the building through the main entrance or the back recess doors, where they will be greeted by a fifth grade teacher daily at 8:20 a.m.  After 8:25 a.m. all students must enter the building through the main entrance doors.

September 11-21:
1st - 5th grade: Beginning September 11, students will enter the building independently from the bus or family drop-off.  The main entrance doors will be unlocked from 8:20 - 8:30 a.m. for students to enter the building independently.  There will also be Bowen staff at the main doors and Blue Zone to greet students and assist students who may need support with the transition.  Families will not accompany their 1st - 5th grade students into the building.  If families need to check-in with the office staff or nurse, they should go directly to the office after their child heads to class.

Kindergarten:  K teachers will meet their students at the small entrance to the left of the building when looking at the building.  There is a small mulched area with a Kindergarten sign.  Kindergarten teachers will remain outside with students from 8:20 - 8:25 a.m.  Any Kindergarten student who arrives after 8:25 a.m. will walk into the school independently, through the main entrance, directly to their class where they will be greeted by their teacher.  5th grade students will also be helping K/1 students, 5th grade morning greeters will be another friendly face to help K/1 students unpack and enter the classroom.  If families need to check-in with the office staff or nurse, they should go directly to the office after their child heads to class.

Bus Arrival:  All students, K - 5th, arriving on a bus from Boston or from Newton will enter the building using the main entrance.  Students on the Boston bus will go directly to Morning Care in the cafeteria because of the early arrival.  Students on the Newton busses will remain on the bus until 8:20 a.m and then enter the building when the doors open and go directly to class at 8:20 a.m.

September 24:
Kindergarten:  A member of the K team will meet students at the side door entrance to allow K students in.  Only K students may use this entrance.  K students will then walk independently to their lockers where they will be greeted by a K teacher and a 5th grade morning greeter.   If families need to check-in with the office staff or nurse, they should go directly to the office through the main entrance after their child heads to class.

Other notes to remember during arrival for all families:
  • The main entrance doors are unlocked from 8:20 - 8:30 a.m.  A Bowen staff member will be there daily to greet students.
  • Any student who arrives after 8:30 a.m. must sign-in at the office and will be marked “tardy” for that day.
  • Blue Zone is one way to drop off your child in the morning.  Please review the Blue Zone notes on our website.  In order to use the Blue Zone, your child must be able to exit the car safely, quickly, and independently.  The driver must remain in the car.  When using the Blue Zone please pull up to the end of the Blue Zone, do not stop at or near the crosswalk.  All students should walk on the sidewalk to cross the driveway in the designated crosswalk.  The driveway is used for buses and authorized vehicles during arrival and departure.
  • If you are going to park and walk your child to the main entrance, please follow all posted parking signs to keep children and neighbors safe.  This will also ensure you do not receive a parking violation.
  • This arrival plan is always a work in progress and we are thoughtful about making adjustments that best meet the needs of our students.  I welcome your feedback in order to improve the arrival process.
