Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
April 6, 2018
___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Bowen Families,
It was another busy week!  We are proud of our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders for the manner in which they approached completing the first MCAS sessions of the season.  Other students were respectful of the testing that was happening throughout the building as well.  5th grade will complete the ELA MCAS on Monday and then we will return to our school routines until May.  I hope to see many of you at this weekend’s PTO Science Day.  It should be a great community day!  Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!
Yours truly,
Diana

News You Need to Know

Bowen Book Swap
Next week some 5th grade students will be hosting a school-wide book swap in the lobby and the front of the school.  A book swap is when you bring books that you have read, grown out of, or no longer want.  You can then trade your books for other books that you would like to read.  It is an easy way for you to get new books that you like.  Donations will be accepted starting Monday.  The Book Swap will begin Tuesday, directly after school during dismissal.  You can also donate money for our school library.

Join the Superintendent and School Committee at our Annual Bowen Community Forum
Please join me for a community forum meeting with the Superintendent and some School Committee members this Thursday, April 12, at 8:30 a.m. in the Staff Room.  This is a time with the Superintendent and School Committee as they share some of their goals for the district over the next year.  It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions, share concerns, meet district leaders and connect with other Bowen parents and guardians.  I hope to see you there.

The PowerPoint Presentation of the Principal’s Community Discussion
Earlier this week I shared a summary of the principal’s community discussion but did not include the modified copy of the PowerPoint presentation.  I have included the attachment today.

Lost and Found - LAST CALL
Coats and jackets are hanging on the rack outside the office, while gloves, hats, and mittens are on the lobby table.  Take a look and see if you can claim any items that have gone missing from home!  Any items remaining when we break for April vacation will be donated.

Annual GELF Event
Are you passionate about the  power of educational travel?  If so, support our students and buy tickets now to the GELF dinner!  Buy Your Tickets to the 10th anniversary benefit dinner in support of Newton student travel scholarships.  Newton strives to give all students access to international learning experiences which foster critical 21st century skills, including access to global travel and learning. The Jennifer Price Global Education Leadership Fund (GELF) supports students who lack the financial means to take advantage of these opportunities.  Please support our students by attending the 10th anniversary GELF benefit dinner, which will take place on May 5, 2018 from 6:30-11:30 pm at Newton North High School. This event is a scrumptious, five-course community affair, paired with fine beer and wine, and complete with auction, live band, and dancing. Join us as we celebrate the students, teachers, and donors who make global learning possible.  Your support counts! Because of you, GELF is able to provide scholarship funds to 20-25 low-income students to participate in the dozen different international trips offered every year and to take part in learning opportunities otherwise not available to them. Since 2008, GELF has been able to provide 173 students with over $262,000 in scholarship funding to participate in educational programs in Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Italy, India, Czech Republic, Poland, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Germany, Cuba, Galapagos, Tanzania, Nicaragua, Peru, Spain, France, Panama, Australia, and China.
