Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
April 2, 2018
___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Bowen Families,
It was a busy week at Bowen which delayed our weekly newsletter.  The Bowen Book Fair and BAM was another success for our  school community.  I appreciate the continued support and involvement from the Bowen family community.  Your support and involvement continued in the community discussion on Thursday when we reviewed Bowen’s achievement on state assessments.  It will be great to have a five day week back at school!  Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!
Yours truly,
Diana

News You Need to Know
A Summary of the Principal’s Community Discussion
We ended our month with a community discussion based on our students’ achievement on state standardized assessments.  In January, an annual letter sharing our School Report Card was emailed to all families.  During this week’s discussion, I reviewed the information highlighted in this letter, modeled how I look at the data with staff and discussed strategies to improve student achievement, with a focus on science, technology and engineering.  I have attached a modified copy of the PowerPoint presentation.  A number of parents expressed an interest to continue to engage in conversations like this as well as planning a meeting next year to discuss homework.

MCAS Testing Schedule
Spring is here, which also means our MCAS testing begins.  Our testing window was determined by the district to ensure that each school will have the appropriate IT support.  We understand that some absences are unavoidable, but we do ask that everyone be mindful of the testing dates when making appointments, etc.  Testing will be computer-based for all grades.  We know that this impacts some of our CAS Programs and Community Blocks, we hope that you will collaborate with us to accommodate the MCAS Schedule.

Bowen Community Forum with the Superintendent and School Committee
SAVE THE DATE, April 12
Please join me for a community forum meeting with the Superintendent and some School Committee members on April 12 at 8:30 a.m. in the Staff Room.  This a time with the Superintendent and School Committee as they share some of their goals for the district over the next year.  It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions, share concerns, meet district leaders and connect with other Bowen parents and guardians.  I hope to see you there.

  • Bowen International Potluck Dinner
  • The International Potluck Dinner is Friday, April 27, at 6:00 p.m..  Please join us in celebrating Bowen's diversity and international community!  Bring a dish reflective of your heritage, and wear something representative. Ms. Wenger will display art work made by our 3rd and 4th graders. From 7:15-8:30 p.m., there will be student performances (music, folk dance, rhythmic gymnastics, martial arts, Chinese yo yo, magic, and a parade of international outfits).  Please email Jen Lee at jenlee743@gmail.com if your child is interested in performing that evening or willing to wear traditional clothes in our parade. We are also putting together a slide show showcasing the worldly travels of Bowen families, and will display the slide show in the lobby.  Please forward family travel photos to Julia Wu at juliwwu@yahoo.com.
  • School Calendar Update
  • It is that time of the year when we are now planning for the rest of the year.  I will work to keep you informed of important school-wide dates from now until the end of June.  Be sure to keep your calendar updated as well.
