Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
January 26, 2018
Dear Bowen Families,
Today was the 90th day of school!  The school year is half way done.  I think the second half of the school year is going to pass by as quick as the first half did!  This week in school we have been focusing on our expectation to Be Safe.  Ask your child what it looks like and sounds like to be safe at home and at school?
Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!
Yours truly,
News You Need to Know
Bowen Community Forum on Tuesday
Please join me for a community forum meeting with the Superintendent and some School Committee members on January 30th at 8:30 a.m. in the Staff Room.  This a time with the Superintendent and School Committee as they share some of their goals for the district over the next year.  It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions, share concerns, meet district leaders and connect with other Bowen parents and guardians.  I hope to see you there.
NewtonSERVES Project Leader Needed
Plans for NewtonSERVES 2018 are already in the works.  NewtonSERVES is “a Day of Community Service” throughout the city that has volunteers of all ages work on projects throughout the city, including, cleaning up parks, planting gardens, building and painting school bookshelves and spring cleaning.  We need a Project Leader to help organize Bowen’s NewtonSERVE this year.  Typically volunteers work on beautifying our grounds, including raking, mulching and planting.  Please contact me if you are interested in learning more about how you can support Bowen and partner with NewtonSERVES.
Understanding Our Differences Volunteers Needed
Understanding Our Differences (UOD) “is a hands-on, participatory curriculum to foster respect, acceptance, and compassion for people of all abilities in elementary schools and communities at large.”  3rd grade has participated in the blindness unit and 5th grade will be participating in program on physical disabilities on February 2.  There will be additional programs presented to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade during the remainder of the year and we need volunteers.  Please contact Eileen Dibb, Eileendibbfox@gmail.com., if you are interested learning how you can support UOD at Bowen.
Bowen School Council - January Update
At this month’s school council meeting, we continued to develop a community goal for our 2018 - 2021 School Improvement Plan.  Our draft goal states that we will “creatively engage families in school initiatives to increase involvement, connectedness and support.”  We are now discussing what our anticipated outcomes will be and how we will integrate Responsive Classroom and math.  We are also discussing how this goal should be a shared experience between home and school.  Our discussion will continue at next month’s school council meeting, March 16, 2018 at 7:30 a.m.   Please remember that all Bowen School Council meetings are open to the Bowen community.  Feel free to join us!
