Dear Bowen Families,
Happy new year!  The first blizzard of 2018 delayed our first weekly communication of the year.  We have kicked of the new year in school in a positive way, including this month’s school assembly led by 4th grade.  They presented a timeline of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life.  At the end of the assembly, 4th graders invited students to think about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders who have made a difference in our county and asked them how they can make a positive change in our world.  We hope families will continue this conversation at home this weekend.  Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy the long weekend, see you on Tuesday!
Yours truly,
Diana

News You Need to KnowNewton’s 50th Annual MLK Celebration
The 50th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration will be Monday, January 15th at 9:30 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, Newton Center.  The Newton Community Celebration was first established in 1968.  The Community Celebration was founded by members of the Myrtle Baptist Church as a means of remembering the civil rights leader in the context of a community celebration of his life and the ideals he strove to achieve for all people.  This is a family event with a large attendance and includes music & short recitations by students from the Newton Public Schools.

Bowen Community Forum
Please join me for a community forum meeting with the Superintendent and some School Committee members on January 30th at 8:30 a.m. in the Staff Room.  This a time with the Superintendent and School Committee as they share some of their goals for the district over the next year.  It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions, share concerns, meet district leaders and connect with other Bowen parents and guardians.  I hope to see you there.

MCAS Testing Schedule
While springtime seems a little far away at the moment, we wanted everyone to have the dates for MCAS testing in grades 3, 4, and 5 well in advance.  Our testing window was determined by the district to ensure that each school will have the appropriate IT support.  We understand that some absences are unavoidable, but we do ask that everyone be mindful of the testing dates when making appointments, etc.  Testing will be computer-based for all grades.  We know that this impacts some of our CAS Programs and Community Blocks, we hope that you will collaborate with us to accommodate the MCAS Schedule.
