Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
December 15, 2017
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear Bowen Families,
It has been another enjoyable week at Bowen. The children and staff enjoyed our first snow recess, CAS programs and our winter instrumental and choir concert!  We are excited about our last week of school in 2017 and look forward to many families joining us for publishing parties next week.  Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy the weekend, see you next week!
Yours truly,
Diana
News You Need to Know
School Spirit Day - Friday, December 22nd
We are going to celebrate the last day of school before vacation and the last school day of 2017 with a school spirit day.  All students and staff are invited to come to school comfy and cozy on Friday, December 22.  This includes wearing your favorite warm pajamas or your favorite comfy clothes like sweatpants or sweatshirt… or even a Bowen t-shirt.  This is just one of many ways we celebrate being part of the Bowen community.
Supporting Bowen Families - Gift Card Donations
Throughout the year there are times when Bowen families need some support for groceries, clothing and other supplies.  Our goal at Bowen is to ensure that all families feel support and have access to what they need as a family.  Part of our work includes collaborating with local organizations and we also appreciate the support from our own Bowen families.  Please consider donating a gift card to the office that will be given to families in need throughout the year.  Helpful gift cards include, Star Market, Market Basket, Target, CVS, Wegmans, etc.  Thank you for your generosity.
MCAS Testing Schedule
While springtime seems a little far away at the moment, we wanted everyone to have the dates for MCAS testing in grades 3, 4, and 5 well in advance.  Our testing window was determined by the district to ensure that each school will have the appropriate IT support.  We understand that some absences are unavoidable, but we do ask that everyone be mindful of the testing dates when making appointments, etc.  Testing will be computer-based for all grades.  We know that this impacts some of our CAS Programs and Community Blocks, we hope that you will collaborate with us to accommodate the MCAS Schedule.

December School Council Update
At this month’s school council meeting, we reviewed Newton Public Schools community goals in order to help identify our own school goals.  Once created, our Bowen School community goals will be incorporated in our School Improvement Plan, 2018 - 2021.  We are discussing how we can creatively engage families in school initiatives to increase involvement, connectedness and support, including Responsive Classroom and Mathematics.  We will finalize our goal and action steps this winter.
This discussion will continue at next month’s school council meeting, January 26, 2018 at 7:30 a.m.   Please remember that all Bowen School Council meetings are open to the Bowen community.  Feel free to join us!
