Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
October 13, 2017
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Bowen Families,
Fall is here, as we notice this week’s cool weather!  With the change of the seasons, we know that it is hard to plan how to dress for the cooler mornings and warming afternoons.  It is helpful if you label clothing so that we can return lost items that might be removed during recess.  You can also check out the lost and found in the lobby.  Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy the weekend, see you on Monday!

Yours truly,
Diana

News You Need to Know

Elementary Progress Conferences
The window for fall conferences is almost upon us, and we know that most classrooms have been busily scheduling meeting times to share information about how the beginning of the school year is going.  If you have not yet scheduled a time with your child’s teacher, please do so, as conferences are a key opportunity to build and strengthen home-school connections!  Here are a few thoughts about conferences shared in a recent “Education Update” article:
  • Build relationships and trust up front.  The conference should not be the first point of contact between the school and your family.  If there are questions or concerns about academic or social issues, do not wait until the conference to bring them up.  Phone calls and e-mail help lay the groundwork for productive conversations at the face-to-face conference.
  • Clarify learning outcomes. While the conference is not a time to process the entire year’s learning standards, all families should have access to and understanding of the grade-level curriculum expectations.  This provides a better understanding of how your child will learn and grow over the course of the school year.
  • Listen. Both parents/guardians and teachers should have the opportunity to share their thoughts about who the child is as a learner and any concerns they may have at this point.  It is crucial that everyone take the time to hear what the other person is saying in order to better understand and help the child have a successful year.
  • Involve students. Talk with your child about their perspective on the start of the school year!  How do they feel things are going, both academically and socially?  What are their goals and challenges?  This will help to better inform the conversation.

  • School-wide Professional Practice Goal
  • Every year the Bowen Staff works on creating a school-wide professional practice goal.  We work on this goal throughout the year and usually utilize our time together during our early release Wednesdays and Thursday to participate in building based professional development.  This year our staff will practice courageous conversations about race in order to develop a shared understanding of the impact of racial identity on the school experiences of staff and students. Our goal complements Newton Public Schools goals as well.  A goal for the Newton Public Schools is to demonstrate a commitment to educational equity by narrowing achievement gaps with respect to race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status.  This includes preparing school-based teams and leaders to lead conversations about race that in turn foster a more welcoming and inclusive school climate for staff, students and families.  I look forward to sharing highlights from our work throughout the year!
  • Playground Update
  • Earlier this month I spoke with the PTO regarding the current status of our playground, including some safety concerns with the ground cover.  In response to this concern, the city did spread mulch around various play structure elements.  This is typically a project that families help with in the spring during the city’s annual Newton Serves community event.  I hope that we will have families volunteer to participate in Newton Serves for spring cleaning, this will also include adding mulch to our playground.
  • Picture Retake Day
  • Picture Retake Day is on Wednesday, November 1, 2017.  If you are dissatisfied with your portrait and would like to try again, you have the opportunity for a retake.  Please return the entire, undamaged portrait package to the photographer on Retake Day.  Please keep your class photo.  Write any suggestions for the photographers on a piece of paper so that it shows through the envelope window.  Retake day is rain or shine, and may mean that portrait retakes will be taken indoors and a natural outdoor background will be applied.
