Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
October 6, 2017

Dear Bowen Families,

It was another very busy week at Bowen and it seemed to end so quickly that we didn’t even have time to send out our weekly update.  Some of the excitement included enjoying a Creative Arts and Sciences performance by the New England Percussion Ensemble sponsored by the PTO.  You will read more about it in this week’s newsletter and your child can share with you too.  Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy the long weekend, see you on Tuesday!

Yours truly,
News You Need to Know
Bowen Family Survey Reminder
The Bowen School Council is seeking your feedback as we continue the practice  of implementing a brief family survey.  It is important for us to hear from as many parents and guardians as possible about what is working well at Bowen, areas to improve, and additional thoughts you have about your family’s experience at school.
The online survey is open will close on October 9, 2017.  In addition to the online survey, a PDF is available upon request and paper copies are available in the office.  We also translated versions in the other primary languages spoken in Bowen homes: Chinese, Russian and Hebrew.  These are available in hard copy, upon request.
The survey can be found at the following link:
We look forward to using this valuable feedback to continue to help us grow and learn!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.  Thank you!
From the Health Offic
This week Nurse Rosen sent an informational letter to all families.  Please be sure to take some time to read this letter.  It also highlighted the upcoming flu clinic.  The Health and Human Services Department is once again pleased to offer the influenza vaccine to all Newton students.  The flu shot will be administered during the school day at no charge to families.  The Bowen flu clinic will be held on October 24, 2017.  Registration forms may be downloaded from www.newtonma.gov/flu or picked up from Ms. Rosen, our school nurse.  These forms must be returned to school no later than October 20, 2017.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Rosen by e-mail at barbara_rosen@newton.k12.ma.us or by phone at 617-559-9335.
A Message from the Superintendent
This year, the Newton Public Schools will provide interested elementary school families with opportunities, information and resources on talking to children about issues of race, culture, and identity. This work will be personalized to individual school communities, based upon needs and interest.
To lead this work, the district is working with Amy Behrens, a parent coach, diversity educator, and NPS parent. She will support parent volunteers from all schools to help them.
  • Identify needs specific to their schools
  • Create opportunities, through events and activities, for face-to-face conversations and dialogue
  • Provide families with valuable information, tools and resources
  • If you would like to learn more, please email Amy at amy@amybehrens.com. The first meeting for interested volunteers will be held on Tuesday, October 10th at Angier (1697 Beacon) from 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. You may RSVP to the meeting via this link: https://goo.gl/forms/UuRYZbuSgrAamM322
  • Creative Arts and Sciences
  • Creative Arts + Sciences kicked off the year with an exciting all-school program by New England Percussion Ensemble on Thursday.  Using a wide variety of instruments from around the world -- from hollow logs to trash bags to snare drums to a marimba and more -- the three piece ensemble took students on a musical journey from ancient times right up to today. Students were not only exposed to the percussion family of instruments, but also encouraged to explore their own creativity. Grounded in a multi-ethnic approach to music, the program is designed to develop an awareness that music is fundamental to human emotion and expression, a universal language that connects us all.  This program was brought to our students by Bowen’s Creative Arts + Sciences program, which is funded entirely by the PTO.
  • CAP Volunteers Wanted
  • This morning 17 parents attend the informational CAP meeting.  We are looking forward to having CAP return to Bowen this fall. Please consider supporting this program by becoming a CAP volunteer and helping to teach strategies to reduce children’s vulnerability to verbal, physical and sexual assault. The next training begins Oct. 29. For more info please contact Gail Sommer gsommer@familyaccess.org
  • Staff Updates
  • This week we will welcome Rohan Roberts Goldman as one of our lunch attendants.
