Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
September 22, 2017

Dear Bowen Families,
This week we celebrated the last day of summer, welcomed the first day of fall, and many families also celebrated the new year!  With so much to celebrate, we still had a busy four day week at school. Students and staff are settling into new routines and are beginning to dive into exciting new units.  Staff are gathering assessment information for each child to ensure we are meeting the needs of each learner. Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy your weekend, and we will see you on Monday!
Yours truly,

News You Need to Know

Bowen School Council Update & Elections
Every school in Massachusetts is required, by law, to have a school council made up of parents and teachers that serves as an advisory board to the principal.  The council meets in open meetings monthly, and everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. This year the Bowen School Council will continue its work on communication and address priorities that emerge from this year’s Bowen family survey. While we invite everyone to join our meetings, we are also looking for 1 or 2 new members to serve on the council.  This year, we continue to work towards building a School Council that is representative of our school community. Serving on the council is a commitment of only about an hour a month and meetings will be held on one Friday of each month from 7:30 - 8:20 a.m.  It is a fun and engaging way to get directly involved in your student’s education at Bowen.  Each term on the council runs for 3 years. If you are interested in joining the council, please email one or both of the co-chairs by September 29 to let them know. (Principal Guzzi at and Jesse Moore If more than three parents are interested, we will hold an election. All parents in the school community will have the opportunity to cast an anonymous ballot for the candidate(s) of their choice.

What is Community Block?
This year we are continuing to integrate a school-wide Community Block into classroom schedules from 8:45 - 9:30 a.m. each Friday.  Community Block is a designated time to foster and develop relationships among our students, staff, classrooms, and the larger community.  There are no specialists scheduled during this time and no services provided, allowing classes to  invite other school members to Community Block.  There is a range of activities that students will be engaging in during this time, including school-wide assemblies, classroom buddies, STEM project, family visitors, etc.  Feel free to ask your child what they did in community block throughout the year!

School Safety Day - Evacuation Walk
On Friday, September 29th, Bowen School will practice the procedure for leaving the school and relocating to an off-campus site.  The initial steps for leaving the building are the same as for a fire drill, which we have already practiced as individual classrooms and as a whole school.  In the case of an event where students and staff are not safely able to gather on the Upper Field, we walk to our designated site, which is the Lutheran Church of the Newtons at 1310 Centre Street.  Our evacuation practice will begin at 8:45 a.m., and we will all be back to school by 9:45 a.m. that morning.  Keep your fingers crossed for a sunny day!
