Bowen’s Weekly Family Update
September 8, 2017
________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Bowen Families,

Despite my back to school nightmare where it snowed on the first day of school, it has been an amazing week as we welcomed both new and returning students and families to Bowen.  Staff, students and families are quickly getting into the new school routine.  This is the first edition of Bowen’s Weekly Family Update.  The goal of this communication is to give you a quick overview of relevant community information and to share upcoming news and events.  I hope you find this to be informative and helpful.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Yours truly,
Diana

Weekly News
Bowen PTO Back-to-School Picnic
We’ve been back in school for a week, and it’s time for our first gathering of the official school year at the Back-to-School Picnic!  The picnic, hosted by the Bowen PTO, will be on Monday, September 11th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on the Bowen playground.  There will be free pizza and drinks!  Even if you’re only able to make a brief appearance, it is greatly appreciated.  We look forward to seeing you then!

Bowen Back-to-School Night
On Wednesday, September 13th, we will welcome our Bowen parents and guardians into our school to learn more about what the year will look like for their children!  Over the past two years, the Bowen School Council spent a great deal of time talking about the need to “rebrand” the evening to emphasize how important it is for parents & guardians to attend.  We have made some adjustments and hopefully improvements to the event!
Here is the overall schedule for the evening:
            6:30 - 7:15 p.m.  Grades K-2 (PTO Greeting, Group Presentation & Classroom Visits)
                                    Cafeteria: 1st grade
                                    Library:  Kindergarten
                                    Auditorium: 2nd grade
            7:30 - 8:15 p.m.  Grades 3-5 (PTO Greeting, Group Presentation & Classroom Visits)
Cafeteria:  5th grade
                                    Library:  3rd grade
                                    Auditorium:  4th grade
This year there will be no formal PTO Presentation or Welcome from the Principal.  Parents expressed an interest in having more time for curriculum presentations and classroom visits.  While this is the focus of the evening, we still want the PTO to introduce themselves to families and share overall goals for the PTO this year.  They will join each grade level presentation for five minutes to share a brief overview.

Morning Arrival Routine Review September 11-22
2nd - 5th grade: Beginning September 11, students will enter the building independently from the bus, family drop-off or walking to school independently.  The main entrance doors will be unlocked from 8:20 - 8:30 a.m. for students to enter the building independently.  There will also be Bowen staff at the main doors and Blue Zone to greet students and assist students who may need support with the transition.  Families will not accompany their 2nd - 5th grade students into the building.  If families need to check-in with the office staff or nurse, they should go directly to the office after their child heads to class.

1st grade:  1st grade teachers will meet their students at the designated 1st grade section in the front of the building.  1st grade teachers will remain outside with students from 8:20 - 8:25 a.m. and then walk students into the building.  Any 1st grader who arrives after 8:25 a.m. will walk into the school independently directly to their class where they will be greeted by their teacher.  5th grade students will also be helping K/1 students.  These 5th grade morning greeters will be another friendly face to help K/1 students unpack and enter the classroom.  If families need to check-in with the office staff or nurse, they should go directly to the office after their child heads to class.

Kindergarten:  K teachers will meet their students at the small entrance to the left of the building when looking at the building.  There is a small mulched area with a Kindergarten sign.  Kindergarten teachers will remain outside with students from 8:20 - 8:25 a.m.  Any Kindergarten student who arrives after 8:25 a.m. will walk into the school independently, through the main entrance, directly to their class where they will be greeted by their teacher.  5th grade students will also be helping K/1 students, 5th grade morning greeters will be another friendly face to help K/1 students unpack and enter the classroom.  If families need to check-in with the office staff or nurse, they should go directly to the office after their child heads to class.
Bus Arrival:  All students, K - 5th, arriving on a bus from Boston or from Newton will enter the building using the main entrance.  Students on the Boston bus will go directly to Early Morning Care in the cafeteria because of the early arrival. Students on the Newton buses will remain on the bus until 8:20 a.m and then enter the building when the doors open and go directly to class at 8:20 a.m.

Creative Arts + Sciences is Looking for Volunteers!
Bowen’s Creative Arts + Sciences committee is excited to kick off another year of great programming at Bowen.  As you may know, Creative Arts + Sciences is part of city-wide program that brings outstanding, curriculum-linked programming to our classrooms for all grade levels. Bowen's Creative Arts and Sciences program is 100% funded by PTO contributions and run by parent volunteers.
Through CAS programming, students get to meet best-selling authors, conduct hands-on science experiments, explore American history, apply mathematical concepts and experience a broad range of cultures through dance, music, storytelling—and much more. These programs excite, engage and inspire our children.
CAS is looking for new volunteers!  The time commitment for this committee is very manageable and much of the work can be done from home. Please consider getting involved.  CAS Committee Co-Chairs Lisa Butts and Daniela Alvarez-Bradley would be happy to tell you more, please feel free to contact them directly.  CAS@bowenpto.org. Thank you for your support.
