Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  The weather outside might not be exactly what we were hoping for to close out the month of March and welcome April, but let’s put a positive spin on it.  Today is “National Crayon Day,” and it seems like it’s the perfect day to stay inside, open a box of crayons, and do some drawing!  Right?  Right??  Okay...well, we tried!  Regardless of whether you spend lots of time indoors or outdoors this weekend, we hope that you have the chance to do something that makes you happy, rested, and refreshed for the week ahead.  Thank you for everything you do to support your child’s learning and to make the Bowen community great!  Have a wonderful weekend!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

Bowen Science Day - This Sunday!
No plans for Sunday afternoon?  Come to Bowen and see more than 100 student-led projects, parent demonstrations, and community science presentations on display!  Bowen will be open from 1:00-4:00 p.m. so that families can come and spend some quality science time together.  Admission is free, and there will be activities for all ages, science movies in the library, and drinks/snacks available.  We can’t wait to see you there!

School Council March Meeting Update
This morning, the Bowen School Council met to discuss the proposed Newton School budget and heard about how this budget proposal will directly affect Bowen.  Attached to this e-mail is the presentation that was shared. Proposed Budget   If you have any questions, please reach out to members of the Bowen School Council or Bowen PTO.

MCAS Testing Begins…
Next week we will begin our English/Language Arts MCAS testing for grades 3 & 4.  Both grades will be taking the computer-based test, which is a new experience for all of our kids.  Teachers have been working with their classes to prepare to take this assessment, while keeping in mind that the grade-level curriculum set by the district is aligned in a way to help children be ready to show their thinking.  We are confident that everyone will do their best work!

Lost and Found
We have a new setup for our lost and found!  Coats and jackets are hanging on the rack outside the office, while gloves, hats, and mittens are on the lobby table. Take a look and see if you can claim any items that have gone missing from home!  Any items remaining when we break for April vacation will be donated.

Student Callback Line
The student callback line (617-559-9350) has been out-of-order for the past couple of weeks, but it seems to be back up and working!  Fingers crossed!

Responsive Home Workshops
Mark your calendars!  Please join other Newton parents for a workshop to focus on how parents and guardians can use Responsive Classroom practices at home.  Responsive Classroom is an approach to teaching and learning that is centered on the foundation that a social curriculum is just as important as the academic curriculum.  An important goal of Responsive Classroom is to create a school climate that is kind, safe, respectful, and predictable.  Amy Kelly, District Leader of Social & Emotional Learning, will discuss ways that families can use the same language and practices of Responsive Classroom to create a cohesive, unified experience for children, as well as to tackle common home-life challenges.
There are two sessions left to choose from this year:
Wednesday, April 12th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Thursday, May 11th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)

Sessions will be held in Room 210 at the District Education Center, 100 Walnut Street, in Newton.  No registration is required, and all sessions are open to the public.  We are looking forward to these workshops  and the opportunity to work closely with families to support our children!
