Bowen News
March 10, 2017

Dear Bowen Families,
Happy Friday!  Do we even really want to talk about the sudden turn of weather-related events?  Then again, how can we not?  Once again, Mother Nature lulled us all into a sense of complacency and had us daring to dream of putting winter firmly behind us, before turning around and throwing some snow our way.  While today is rather tame, the meteorologists are starting to get pretty excited about early next week!  We’ll just focus on one thing at a time here, and simply remind everyone that this weekend we “spring ahead” and move the clocks one hour forward.  (Those clocks that don’t do it themselves, that is!)  Losing an hour is never fun, but it will be lovely to have that extra hour of daylight in the afternoons!  As always, thank you for everything you do support your children and make Bowen a great place to be.  Have a wonderful weekend, and we will see you on Monday morning!
Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

Bowen Science Day - Registration Closing Soon!
Have you signed up yet? Registration forms  for Bowen Science Day (Sunday, April 2nd!) were sent home the week after February vacation in backpacks, and parent volunteers visited classrooms that week to promote the event with an experiment.  To sign up and participate, your child can return the first page of the packet to the Bowen Science Day Robot in the school lobby or register online at Registration is required, so please sign up by Tuesday, March 14 – Pi Day! There are many online resources available at this website as well; use them to get project ideas, learn how to make a poster board and view kid-friendly science websites for inspiration or enjoyment.  If you or your child have any questions, email at any time.

Newton Community Forum - Talking with Children About Race
Over the past few years, the Newton Public Schools have undertaken the important work of addressing issues of race, bias, and culture.  In order to extend the work in the classrooms to the home and larger Newton community, Superintendent of Schools David Fleishman invites you to a community forum: “Talking to Children About Race: Why and How?” to be held on Wednesday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at Angier School (1697 Beacon Street).  While an RSVP is not required, it will help to plan for materials and activities.  You can use the following link to RSVP:                      We hope to see you there!

Bowen International Potluck Dinner
The annual Bowen International Potluck Dinner is Friday, March 24, at 6:00pm.  Please join us in celebrating Bowen's diversity and international community!  Bring a dish reflective of your heritage, and wear something representative. Ms. Wenger will have art exhibits by our 3rd and 4th graders on display. From 7:15-8:30pm, enjoy performances of traditional music, dance, rhythmic gymnastics, martial arts, Chinese lion dance, and an international fashion show.  Please email Jen Lee at if your child is interested in joining our performance line-up (i.e., play an instrument, sing, dance, or wear traditional clothes in our fashion show). We would also like to update our slide show showcasing the worldly travels of Bowen families.  Please forward family travel photos to Julia Wu at  The slide show will be on display in the Bowen lobby for families and students to enjoy.  Lastly, please sign up to help set up the gym, serve food, and/or clean up.  Guests cannot serve themselves food in accordance to the health code so we need volunteers to help serve food that night.  Thanks!

Looking for Some Great Host Families!
Every year, as part of Newton’s efforts to encourage intercultural learning, the Visiting International Student Program at Newton South invites twenty international students to join us at Newton South.  This is our fourth year running this program, and we have hosted students from all over the globe.  This year, we have students from a variety of countries including Italy, Colombia, China, Brazil, Spain, Thailand, Indonesia, and Germany.  It has been a blast getting to know these students and they've added so much to our community.

Of course, our wonderful South Side families are an important part of this program!  Families who open their homes and hearts to these students make this intercultural learning experience possible.  Past families have told us how much they have gotten out of the experience.  Connections are made that last well beyond the duration of the visit.

We are already starting to think about Fall 2017.  We have wonderful families who have hosted in the past returning and we are looking for a few new families as well.  In our effort to attract great families, we are working with a company called Educatius International.

If you would like to learn more about being a host parent, you can contact Claudette Rowe from Educatius International at or 508-246-7028.  If you would like to know more about the visiting international student program at Newton South, you can contact me.

Please consider hosting an international student!  You'll be supporting this great program and past host families will tell you what a wonderful experience hosting an international student can be for everybody involved.

Best wishes,
Kara Veley
