Dear Bowen Families,

HAPPY FRIDAY!!  The week leading up to a vacation always feels a little longer than a normal week, but now here we are!  We know that everyone (and we do mean EVERYONE) is ready to have some time off from the regular school routines.  Our hope for families over the break is that everyone spends a lot of time doing the things that you love to do.  Have an amazing ending to 2016, and ring in 2017 with a big smile.  We look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know
Incoming Kindergarten Registration
Are you the parent of a child who will be entering Kindergarten next year?  Do you know of someone else who has a child who will be joining our Bowen community for the 2017-2018 school year? Please let Ms. Megrian in the office know if you have the name of any incoming kindergarten student, even if you think he or she is already on the list.  Newton has made changes to the kindergarten registration process--please check out the Kindergarten Registration website at <http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/Page/2912> for additional information.  For your convenience, an Informational Kindergarten Flyer is attached as well as a FAQ sheet. Kindergarten Informational Flyer   FAQ  Please let us know if your family would like an informational flyer in a language other than English.

Lost and Found
Is your child missing some items of clothing?  Have you been wondering where that lost mitten has gotten itself to?  Please check out the items from the lost and found bin, which are now laid out on the table in the lobby for easier viewing.  We will be donating any unclaimed items on Friday after break.

Newton’s 49th Annual MLK Celebration
On Monday, January 16th at 9:30 a.m., please join Mayor Setti Warren for the 49th Annual Martin
Luther King, Jr. Newton Community Celebration, first established in 1968.  The Community Celebration was founded by members of the Myrtle Baptist Church as a means of remembering the civil rights leader in the context of a community celebration of his life and the ideals he strove to achieve for all people.  This is a family event with a large attendance with music & short recitations by students from the Newton Public Schools.  This year’s event will be held at Temple Beth Avodah at 45 Puddingstone Lane in Newton Centre.

MCAS Testing Schedule
While springtime seems a little far away at the moment, we wanted everyone to have the dates for MCAS testing in grades 3, 4, and 5 well in advance.  We understand that some absences are unavoidable, but we do ask that everyone be mindful of the testing dates when making appointments, etc.  Testing will be computer-based for grades 3 and 4, while the 5th grade testing will be paper-and-pencil.  More information about the test design for this new “next-generation” MCAS will be coming soon!
