December 2, 2016

Dear Bowen Families,
Happy Friday!  We hope that everyone had a wonderful week back at school after the break.  While time off is always appreciated, it certainly feels good to be settling back into the structures and routines of school!  We have a solid three weeks of opportunities for learning and growing as we move through the month of December, and we know that everyone will take advantage of every moment.  So make sure you take some time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate over the weekend...we’re all going to be busy!  Thank you for everything you do to help your children be successful learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  See you on Monday!
Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany
News You Need to Know

Idling in the Blue Zone
We’d just like to remind everyone that the Blue Zone is a “no idling” zone for cars.  Please turn off your car engine while you are waiting for your child to exit the school, unless you need to move forward in the line.  Thanks!

PTO Open Meeting w/Dr. Fleishman & School Committee Members - Next Week!
On Tuesday, December 6th, Newton Superintendent David Fleishman will visit Bowen to hear from parents about what’s working, as well as “hot topics” and issues that affect the Bowen community.  There will also be members of the Newton School Committee in attendance.  We look forward to seeing you at 8:30 a.m. in the Staff Lounge on Tuesday to share your thoughts!

High School Start Time PTO Forums
Earlier this fall, families received an email from the superintendent detailing Newton’s work on high school start times. The district is holding a series of community forums to discuss the benefits and costs of moving the high school start time later and gather feedback on several potential scenarios for a change. Some scenarios change only the high school hours, while others have a direct impact on our school and others in the district.  Research, reports, and scenarios can be found on the district website:
The Oak Hill Middle School PTO is sponsoring a Start Time forum that will be open to the three feeder schools (Bowen, Memorial Spaulding, Zervas) on Thursday, December 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Oak Hill auditorium.  We encourage you to attend!

Hour of Code
The Hour of Code is returning once again to Bowen!  What is it?  The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.  It is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries, and it will take place during the month of December to celebrate Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 5-9).  We want to show that Bowen School is ready to teach students these important skills, so Ms. Dietz, our Instructional Technology Specialist, Ms. Mason, our Library Teacher, and Mr. McBride, our Math Coach, will be working on coding/programming with all of the students over the course of the month.  We can’t wait!  Visit for more details and links to additional activites.

New Month...New Lunch Menu!
