Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  Did you know that today is World Smile Day?  Actually...isn’t EVERY Friday a day that makes most people smile?  Even though we had a short week, it was as busy as ever around Bowen.  Good thing we have another long weekend ahead of us to rest up, because everyone has been working hard at the business of learning!  We hope that your families have plans for the weekend that involve doing things that you love to do and that will help your children (and you!) be ready for the week ahead.  We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

Bowen Flu Clinic
The Health and Human Services Department is once again pleased to offer the influenza vaccine to all Newton students.  The flu shot will be administered during the school day at no charge to families.  The Bowen flu clinic will be held on Tuesday, November 1st.  Registration forms may be downloaded from www.newtonma.gov/flu or picked up from Ms. Rosen, our school nurse.  These forms must be returned to school no later than Friday, October 28th.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Rosen by e-mail at barbara_rosen@newton.k12.ma.us or by phone at 617-559-9335.

“Bowen Walks the Walk”
It’s time to get Bowen outside and walking!  On Friday, October 21st, we will have our annual “Bowen Walks the Walk” walkathon from 8:45-9:30 a.m. during our school-wide Community Block.  An information sheet from the Bowen PTO will be sent home with your child to share more information about this event.  Keep your fingers crossed for good weather!

Elementary Progress Conferences
The window for fall conferences is almost upon us, and we know that most classrooms have been busily scheduling meeting times to share information about how the beginning of the school year is going.  If you have not yet scheduled a time with your child’s teacher, please do so, as conferences are a key opportunity to build and strengthen home-school connections!  Here are a few thoughts about conferences shared in a recent “Education Update” article:
  • Build relationships and trust up front.  The conference should not be the first point of contact between the school and your family.  If there are questions or concerns about academic or social issues, do not wait until the conference to bring them up.  Phone calls and e-mail help lay the groundwork for productive conversations at the face-to-face conference.
  • Clarify learning outcomes. While the conference is not a time to process the entire year’s learning standards, all families should have access to and understanding of the grade-level curriculum expectations.  This provides a better understanding of how your child will learn and grow over the course of the school year.
  • Listen. Both parents/guardians and teachers should have the opportunity to share their thoughts about who the child is as a learner and any concerns they may have at this point.  It is crucial that everyone take the time to hear what the other person is saying in order to better understand and help the child have a successful year.
  • Involve students. Talk with your child about their perspective on the start of the school year!  How do they feel things are going, both academically and socially?  What are their goals and challenges?  This will help to better inform the conversation.
  • Staffing Updates
  • Maritza Perez has joined the Bowen staff as one of our Lunch Monitors.  Welcome!
  • Jamie English has also joined Bowen as a Literacy Specialist for the remainder of this school year.  We’re glad to have her with us!
