Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  Didn’t we just start school?  How is it that we’re already tipping over into the month of October?  That simply goes to show how much has been going on around Bowen, whether in classrooms, during specialist times, in the cafeteria at lunch, or on the playground at recess.  Each and every day brings new opportunities for children to learn and grow, both academically and socially.  We love being part of this exciting process!  Thank you for everything you do to support your children and the Bowen community of learners.  Have a wonderful LONG weekend, and we will see you on Tuesday!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

PTO School Directory
Each year the Bowen Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) creates and distributes a school directory listing every student by class as well as their parent/guardian contact information.  This information is great to have for coordinating activities, such as parties or playdates, with other families.  If your family is new to Bowen or if you have not yet received an email requesting you to confirm your information in Bowen’s online directory, please help us by updating your contact information.  This can be done by going to and using the invitation code Bowen2016. Follow the directions to enter your information.  Please do this by September 30th to allow the PTO to edit and print the directory during the month of October.

Bowen Flu Clinic
The Health and Human Services Department is once again pleased to offer the influenza vaccine to all Newton students.  The flu shot will be administered during the school day at no charge to families.  The Bowen flu clinic will be held on Tuesday, November 1st.  Registration forms may be downloaded from or picked up from Ms. Rosen, our school nurse.  These forms must be returned to school no later than Friday, October 28th.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Rosen by e-mail at or by phone at 617-559-9335.

High School Start Time
Recently, you received an email from the superintendent detailing Newton’s work on high school start times. This fall, the district is asking for your thoughts on the benefits and costs of moving the high school start time later, as well as feedback on several potential scenarios. Some scenarios change only the high school hours, while others impact our school and others in the district.
Research, reports, and scenarios can be found on the district website: I encourage you to attend the community forum at Angier on October 19th at 7:00 p.m. You can also provide feedback via

A “Musical Note”
Good Afternoon Bowen Families,
I am writing to share a few free online music education resources for your child. Some of these websites I have been able to demonstrate during music class and I've told students that I would be emailing parents/guardians with the web addresses.
Quaver's Marvelous World of Music -
- This website has many opportunities for children to compose and arrange music through a
variety of virtual instruments. Help your child to create their own login information and
they can save their work to revisit their creations at a later date.
Lomax the Hound of Music -
- This is a particular section of the site. This site was created with John ,
Feierabend who also wrote the music curriculum that we are using at Bowen.
- This page has many different musical games with familiar characters such as Curious
  George, and Daniel Tiger.
It has been wonderful joining the Bowen community this year. I look forward to meeting many more of you and speaking about your child's musical development. Please feel free to email me with any questions.

Responsive Home Workshops
Mark your calendars!  Please join other Newton parents for a workshop to focus on how parents and guardians can use Responsive Classroom practices at home.  Responsive Classroom is an approach to teaching and learning that is centered on the foundation that a social curriculum is just as important as the academic curriculum.  An important goal of Responsive Classroom is to create a school climate that is kind, safe, respectful, and predictable.  Amy Kelly, District Leader of Social & Emotional Learning, will discuss ways that families can use the same language and practices of Responsive Classroom to create a cohesive, unified experience for children, as well as to tackle common home-life challenges.
There are four sessions to choose from:
Thursday, October 13th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Tuesday, October 18th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.) @ Angier Elementary School
Monday, November 7th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Thursday, December 1st (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Sessions will be held in Room 210 at the District Education Center, 100 Walnut Street, in Newton unless otherwise stated.  No registration is required, and all sessions are open to the public.  We are looking forward to these workshops  and the opportunity to work closely with families to support our children!
