Dear Bowen Families,
Happy second day of fall!  Even though the weather has still felt rather summery this past week, we can see more seasonable temperatures coming soon.  It’s about time!  The first few weeks of school have been busy and filled with learning opportunities as everyone continues to practice and settle into the routines of each day.  We hope that your children have been sharing about all of the happenings around Bowen--there is a lot to talk about!  Thank you for everything you do to help your children learn and grow.  Have a wonderful weekend!
Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know
Bowen Safety Day
This morning, everyone at Bowen School had the opportunity to practice some of our safety procedures both inside and outside the school.  These included how to shelter-in-place for times when we need to keep the school hallways clear, a lockdown for times when we want to keep everyone safe inside their learning spaces, and an evacuation walk for a time when we might have to have all students and staff leave the building and gather in an off-site location.  We were able to quickly and safely leave the building, walk to the Church of the Newtons, and walk back to school before 9:45 a.m.  If you happened to be passing through Newton Centre between 9:00-9:30 a.m., you may have seen us on our walk!

PTO School Directory
Each year the Bowen Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) creates and distributes a school directory listing every student by class as well as their parent/guardian contact information.  This information is great to have for coordinating activities, such as parties or playdates, with other families.  If your family is new to Bowen or if you have not yet received an email requesting you to confirm your information in Bowen’s online directory, please help us by updating your contact information.  This can be done by going to and using the invitation code Bowen2016. Follow the directions to enter your information.  Please do this by September 30th to allow the PTO to edit and print the directory during the month of October.

Library Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering in the Bowen library is a unique opportunity to spend time with your child's class on a regular basis. Each year, a small army of dedicated volunteers works with Ms. Mason to allow the Bowen library to maintain the largest book circulation among all the NPS elementary schools!  Most of the work is restocking books.  A consistent commitment of one to four visits each month is appreciated and usually attainable with multiple volunteers per class. Please, as soon as possible, sign up here and mark your calendar for a Library Volunteer Training Session on Friday, September 30th at 8:30AM in the library.  Contact Marcy Krasnow ( with any questions. Thank you!

Bowen School Council Update & Elections
Every school in Massachusetts is required, by law, to have a school council made up of parents and teachers that serves as an advisory board to the principal.  The council meets in open meetings monthly, and everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. This year the Bowen School Council will continue its work on communication and address priorities that emerge from this year’s Bowen family survey. While we invite everyone to join our meetings, we are also looking for 3 new members to serve on the council.  This year, as we continue to work towards building a School Council that is representative of our school community, we are reserving one of these openings for a council member who also speaks a language other than English. Serving on the council is a commitment of only about an hour a month and meetings will be held on the last Friday of each month from 7:30 - 8:20 a.m.  It is a fun and engaging way to get directly involved in our students' education at Bowen.  Each term on the council runs for 3 years. If you are interested in joining the council, please email one or both of the co-chairs by September 26 to let them know. (Principal Guzzi at and Angela Halliwell at If more than three parents are interested, we will hold an election in which all parents in the school community will have the opportunity to cast an anonymous ballot for the candidate(s) of their choice.

Bowen Back-to-School Night Survey
Thank you for those of you who have already provided feedback about our Back-to-School Night...and we’re looking for more!  The Bowen School Council will be looking at this information at their first meeting, and we would appreciate everyone’s help in providing feedback about this year’s event whether or not you were personally able to attend.  Thank you!
The survey can be found at the following link:

Responsive Home Workshops
Mark your calendars!  Please join other Newton parents for a workshop to focus on how parents and guardians can use Responsive Classroom practices at home.  Responsive Classroom is an approach to teaching and learning that is centered on the foundation that a social curriculum is just as important as the academic curriculum.  An important goal of Responsive Classroom is to create a school climate that is kind, safe, respectful, and predictable.  Amy Kelly, District Leader of Social & Emotional Learning, will discuss ways that families can use the same language and practices of Responsive Classroom to create a cohesive, unified experience for children, as well as to tackle common home-life challenges.
There are four sessions to choose from:
Thursday, October 13th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Tuesday, October 18th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.) @ Angier Elementary School
Monday, November 7th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Thursday, December 1st (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Sessions will be held in Room 210 at the District Education Center, 100 Walnut Street, in Newton unless otherwise stated.  No registration is required, and all sessions are open to the public.  We are looking forward to these workshops  and the opportunity to work closely with families to support our children!
