Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  Our first 5-day week is behind us, and we are fully in business!  Thank you to everyone who joined us for Back-to-School night on Thursday.  It was exciting for families to hear about all the great things in store for their children this year and to have the opportunity to speak with many Bowen staff members in the new cafeteria.  People were definitely curious about the cafeteria!  On Friday morning, Bowen staff and students came together in the gym for our first All-School Meeting during our brand-new Community Block.  As we explained on Thursday night, continuing to build and develop relationships and communication between all members of the Bowen community is a goal for us this year.  Thank you again for everything you do to help your children develop and grow as learners.  Bowen is a great place to be!  Enjoy your weekend, and we will see you on Monday!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know
Back-to-School Night Survey
As mentioned on Thursday night, we are working here at Bowen to find new ways to make our yearly Back-to-School Night a productive and enjoyable event for the whole community!  We would appreciate your help in providing feedback about this year, whether or not you were personally able to attend.  Thank you!

First Fire Drill Practice
Today we we successfully completed our first school wide fire drill evacuation.  Students safely, quickly, and quietly exited the building gathered at the upper field in a timely manner.  This is an opportunity for students to practice leaving the building while listening to the loud fire alarm and seeing the flashing lights.  This ensures that they know what to expect in case of an emergency.  We will continue to practice throughout the year so that students and staff feel prepared if there is an emergency that requires us to evacuate the building.

School Safety Day - Evacuation Walk
On Friday, September 23rd, Bowen School will practice the procedure for leaving the school and relocating to an off-campus site.  The initial steps for leaving the building are the same as for a fire drill, which we have already practiced as individual classrooms and as a whole school.  In the case of an event where students and staff are not safely able to gather on the Upper Field, we walk to our designated site, which is the Lutheran Church of the Newtons at 1310 Centre Street.  Our evacuation practice will begin at 9:00 a.m., and we will all be back to school by 10:00 a.m. that morning.  Keep your fingers crossed for a sunny day!

Responsive Home Workshops
Mark your calendars!  Please join other Newton parents for a workshop to focus on how parents and guardians can use Responsive Classroom practices at home.  Responsive Classroom is an approach to teaching and learning that is centered on the foundation that a social curriculum is just as important as the academic curriculum.  An important goal of Responsive Classroom is to create a school climate that is kind, safe, respectful, and predictable.  Amy Kelly, District Leader of Social & Emotional Learning, will discuss ways that families can use the same language and practices of Responsive Classroom to create a cohesive, unified experience for children, as well as to tackle common home-life challenges.
There are four sessions to choose from:
Thursday, October 13th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Tuesday, October 18th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.) @ Angier Elementary School
Monday, November 7th (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)
Thursday, December 1st (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)

Sessions will be held in Room 210 at the District Education Center, 100 Walnut Street, in Newton unless otherwise stated.  No registration is required, and all sessions are open to the public.  We are looking forward to these workshops  and the opportunity to work closely with families to support our children!
