Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Final Friday of the school year!  While we still have four more days of school before hitting the magic number of 180, this will be the final issue of Bowen News for 2015-2016.  We hope that your year has been filled with wonderful moments and memories...ours certainly was!  Each and every year, we take this time to reflect...REALLY reflect...upon how fortunate we are to work in the Bowen community with such a dedicated and caring staff, committed families, and fantastic students.  We know that summer break is highly anticipated (and will be thoroughly enjoyed), but being part of Bowen makes it a pleasure to come back together in the fall.  Thank you for everything you do to make Bowen the place to be!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

Bowen Enrollment Meeting Summary
Today Bowen families will receive a separate e-mail blast with a summary and notes from the well-attended enrollment meeting this past Monday.  Please let Diana know if you have any questions.

From the 5th Grade Student Council - Bowen Legacy Scholarship
Dear Bowen Elementary School Families,
Last week, Bowen 5th Grade Student Council members met with the recipient of the Bowen Legacy Scholarship.  This scholarship is a social action project for the 5th grade Student Council.  Emma Lee is a graduate of the Newton South class of 2016 and a former Bowen student.   The 5th graders had many questions about life after Bowen and were excited to hear about all the interesting classes, fun clubs, and exciting activities that lay ahead of them at Oak Hill and Newton South.  She told them, “Don’t worry about the future too much, because it will all work itself out.  The teachers are there to help you be prepared.”  Middle school and high school gave her many opportunities to try new things and make lots of new friends, but know that your elementary school friends are still there for you too.  Her final message to the students was clear: don’t take what you have for granted, and use all of the opportunities provided by the Newton Public Schools to follow what you want to do.  Emma will be a freshman at UMass Amherst next fall and plans to study education.  We wish her the best of luck for her future ahead!  We would like to raise money for the Bowen Legacy Scholarship fund.  But, due to the drizzle and lack of cars at the carwash this year, we didn’t make our annual goal of $1000. Donations can be dropped off in the lobby or the main office. We hope you can donate and support the Bowen Legacy Scholarship!
Sincerely,
Bowen 5th grade student council

One More Note from the 5th Grade Student Council - Food Drive!
Dear Bowen families,
During the winter holidays, the Newton community donates more to the Newton food pantry than in the summer vacation due to holiday cheer.  But the summer is a understocked time for the Newton Food Pantry. Therefore more people will go hungry.   We at Bowen Elementary School do not want others to go hungry.  That is why we have made it our mission to help them. We are collecting food to donate to our local food pantry.   However, the food we are collecting to donate does not grow on trees.  We rely on your thoughtful donations.  The food we collect does have some guidelines, though.  The food we collect should not need expensive cookware, such as a microwave.  The foods must not go bad. Some foods that you could donate are:
  • Canned food
  • Chips
  • Crackers
  • Cookies
  • And much more that you can donate to the helpless and hungry people.
  • Please place your donations in the box on the table in the lobby.  The deadline for donations was June 17, 2016, but we have extended our deadline to Monday, June 20th.  We thank you for your cooperation and donation.
  • Sincerely, The Bowen 5th Grade Student Council of May-June, 2016
