Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  This is a particularly happy Friday for everyone involved with PARCC and MCAS testing, as we have finally reached the end of Bowen’s official testing schedule for the year!  While we still have a few make-up exams left to give, our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can get back to their regular schedules.  Although as we reach this last stretch of the year, ALL of our schedules get a little crazy with special events...which is what makes life in an elementary school so much fun!  We hope you have some fun times planned for your weekend and that you have the chance to enjoy time with family and friends.  Thank you for everything you do to make Bowen a great place to be!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

Staff Appreciation Luncheon
The Bowen staff would like to give the Kindergarten and 1st Grade families a HUGE “thank you” for the delicious lunch provided on Tuesday!  There was enough food to feed everyone AND still have some treats left for Wednesday and Thursday!  We also need to give a shout-out to the PTO for organizing and managing the finer details of these lunches throughout the year.  The staff members here at Bowen feel very appreciated!

5th Grade Car Wash - THIS Sunday!!
Time to get your car washed AND help raise funds for a good cause!  This Sunday, 5/22, you can have your car washed AND help the 5th grade class raise money.  Proceeds will go to a charity selected by 5th grade students.  Stop by Bowen between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m on Sunday to show your support!

Understanding Our Differences - Volunteer Appreciation
This morning, the volunteers for Newton’s Understanding Our Differences program were recognized at a community breakfast for their dedication and continued commitment to the program.  We have seen it in action here at Bowen with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade programs, and we know that the program would not be the same without their hard work!  Thank you so much!

Responsive Home Workshop
If you haven’t already attended this parent/guardian workshop that provides practical strategies to promote positive behavior at home, please consider attending.  You will learn steps to creating a Responsive Home, including family meeting, interactive modeling, logical consequences, house rules, positive language, choice and quiet time.  This workshop will be taught by Amy Kelly, District Leader of Social and Emotional Learning.  Upcoming dates:

  • Neighborhood Parking - Bow Road
  • You may have noticed the signs already, but we want to make sure that anyone driving to Bowen knows that there has been a change in parking regulations on Bow Road.  Parking is now only allowed on the even-numbered side of the street.  Please be sure and obey all posted signs!
  • A Note from the Bowen Library
  • Thank you SO MUCH for donating to Bowen Baggies for Books.  We raised over $2,300 and ordered some awesome books. The students are so excited to read the new Mythology, Superhero  and Elephant & Piggie books.  They were also excited to see Ms. Mason’s crimson hair!
  • If you did not get a chance to donate to Bowen Baggies for Books we have a great way to honor a teacher, celebrate your child's time at Bowen or just to support reading. The Support our School Library Web site with Bound to Stay Bound bookstore has a wishlist of books we would like to add to the library. Check out the site to see what is on the list.  It will be open until the end of the school year.
  • Contributions can be made in two ways:
  • 1. Select specific titles from the school wish list. Donor nameplates can be customized and inserted in each book selected.
  • 2. Contribute a specific dollar amount and Bound to Stay Bound will select titles from the wish list to fulfill the amount.
  • To purchase a book or make a general donation click on the “make a donation” button on the top right part of the page.
  • The Web site is: http://www.btsb.com/sosl/bowenschoollibrary6/
  • If you have any questions please email our Library Teacher, Donna Mason, at Donna_Mason@newton.k12.ma.us
