Dear Bowen Families,

Normally, April 15th is a date that strikes fear in the hearts of most adults here in the United States because we associate it with the deadline for filing taxes, a task nobody particularly enjoys.  However, this year April 15th has a very different feel for a couple of reasons.  First, the tax deadline is delayed because Washington, DC is recognizing “Emancipation Day” as a legal holiday today.  The second reason, and the one that adults AND children can both relate to, is that April break starts at 3:00 p.m. today!  While everyone seems to agree that time has been flying by, everyone also seems to agree that they’re ready for a little break.  So turn off those alarm clocks, make some fun/relaxing/exciting plans (or just relish doing nothing), and ENJOY the time off!  We will see you on April 25th!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

Last Day of School
It’s official!  The School Committee voted on Monday night, and the last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 23rd. Dismissal will be at 12:00 p.m. on that day.  Summer is right around the corner!

Newton Serves! Project at Bowen
As the weather is warming up, we need to spruce up the Bowen grounds!  A Newton Serves! Project will take place at Bowen on Sunday, May 1st, from 12:30pm-4:30pm.  We will have 10 yards of mulch delivered, as well as new wood chips for the playground.  We will be clearing out the dead growth from last year and giving Bowen a "clean" feeling.  Many hands make light work, and this important project definitely needs many hands to get it done!  Please consider helping us this year.  You can sign up at this link http://www.newtoncommunitypride.org/NewtonSERVES-volunteer.php.
If you have any questions, please contact Susan MacDonald at 617-775-2621 or susan.macdonald@siemens.com.  Thank you in advance for your help!

Newton Walk & Bike to School Day
Thursday, May 5th will be the Newton Safe Routes to School “Walk & Bike to School Day.”  Newton students will join children across Massachusetts in walking and biking to school to celebrate their livable communities.  An active commute is good for the environment, keeps children healthy, and gives them more time with their friends.  Exercise also helps charge their brains and bodies for a great day of learning!  This day also recognizes the “bus heroes” who help reduce vehicular traffic around the school by riding the bus.  Please be sure and thank our fantastic crossing guards and bus drivers who help make safe commutes possible.  Handmade cards, or simply an extra-large “thank you” would be greatly appreciated!  For more information, please visit “Newton Safe Routes to School” on Facebook.

Staffing Updates
  • Please join us in “welcoming” Megan Donelan and Neftalie Torres to our special education staff, now that they have finished their student teaching.  Megan will be joining Ms. Beil’s kindergarten class and Neftalie will join Ms. Paolillo’s 2nd grade class after April break.
