Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  It seems hard to believe that next week’s newsletter will be our launch into April break, but it’s absolutely true!  Now if only we could start having some consistently spring-like weather, we’d be in really good shape!  It will, of course, come along eventually.  And at least we now have baseball to watch, which always makes it really feel like spring!  We know that there is so much happening next week to “finish up” projects and activities before leaving the building...and we know that it will all get done, thanks to everyone’s hard work and dedication!  So enjoy the weekend and recharge your batteries for the busy week ahead.  We will see you on Monday morning!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

Bowen Science Day Recap!
If you visited Bowen last Sunday afternoon, you know that there was an amazing amount of science happening here!  So many members of the Bowen community spent time visiting project stations and listening to children explain about topics ranging from sound waves to mold to robotic hands to Planaria!  We are so grateful to all of the parents who spearheaded the effort to bring more science to our school and thankful to be part of a community that clearly values the opportunity to let children follow their scientific interests.  We can’t wait to see what next year will bring!

Bowen School Council - April Meeting Summary
At this month’s meeting, the Bowen School Council recognized the meeting date by sharing successful/fun April Fools’ Day jokes they have pulled.  The group has some creative minds!  The next item on the agenda was revisiting the conversation about Curriculum Night.  It is clear from the staff survey that Curriculum Night is the way Bowen staff “launches” the year and sets up expectations, so the Bowen School Council spent time brainstorming ideas and questions in order to hit the ground running for next year.  Some thoughts/ideas included:
  • “Rebranding” the evening to make the subject and importance of the evening clear
  • Getting the date out far in advance for family calendar planning
  • Finding ways to make it easier for parents to attend (childcare, translators, ride sharing)
  • Have families RSVP in advance to track projected attendance; ask families why they are unable to attend
  • Create a poll to find out what parents value most about Curriculum Night (now)
  • Survey parents immediately after Curriculum Night to find out information about what works and what doesn’t
  • Staff members of School Council are creating a description of the topics they cover during Curriculum Night and sending these to the parent members so they can determine new/additional ways to engage parents in the evening.
  • The May School Council meeting on May 20th will be a review of the district/school budget.
  • Crocodile River Performance & Fundraiser - TONIGHT!
  • Come to Newton South High School at 7:00 p.m. and celebrate the global music experience that students enjoyed this fall. Join musicians from Bamako, Mali and Boston, Massachusetts for an evening of world class entertainment in your own backyard. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the door. Each ticket includes complimentary wine, beer and light fare.  This is certain to be a fabulous event for a 21+ audience. Tickets for NPS staff are just $20.  Proceeds will benefit Creative Arts & Sciences 2016-’17 programming in Newton.
