Bowen News
March 24, 2016
Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Thursday!  We were very appreciative of the opportunity to come together as a Bowen community for last Friday’s International Potluck dinner, as there has been a lot going on in the greater Newton community over the past few weeks.  As you may have heard on the news, a number of incidents have recently occurred in which a group or groups of people were the target of actions and/or language that made them feel uncertain, unwelcome, and even unsafe in what should always be a safe environment.  We want to strongly emphasize that we strive here at Bowen to have an inclusive community and celebrate the diverse cultures and backgrounds we bring to school.  We appreciate our roles as educators in supporting students, family, and staff as we work to build cultural proficiency.  We will continue to work as a community to foster open and respectful conversations that reinforce our values and demonstrate our commitment through our actions.  Please feel free to reach out to us with any thoughts, questions, or concerns about this topic.
Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know
Bowen Baggies for Books
Please read the following note from Ms. Mason and the 5th Grade Student Council:
Dear Bowen Families,
Please help us add more books to the Bowen School Library by participating in “Bowen Baggies for Books”. The fifth grade student council handed out baggies to all of the Bowen students at the start of this week. Students should fill the baggies with money! The money will be used to buy books such as Big Nate and Elephant & Piggie.  The class who donates the most money will be the class to check out the books for the first time. And there's more... if we raise over $2,000, Mrs. Mason will dye her hair crimson for the rest of the year! In addition, Mrs. Mason has agreed to go into the dunk tank at the Bowen Spring Fling if we raise over $2,500. Money will be collected through April 4th.
Thank you for helping make our library a better place,
Mrs. Mason & Fifth Grade Student Council
Redcat Classroom Systems
Thanks to the Bowen PTO, four more of our classrooms are now outfitted with Redcat sound systems.  When teacher wears a microphone, his/her voice is projected throughout the room while speaking naturally.  It’s something that benefits all of our students, and we are appreciative of the PTO’s help toward meeting our goal of having a Redcat system in every classroom!
Bowen International Potluck Dinner Recap
If you visited Bowen last Friday night, you know what a fantastic event the International Potluck Dinner was.  And if you weren’t able to make it, well, you missed an evening of delicious foods from a wide variety of cultures, the chance to visit with friends and neighbors from the Bowen community, and an outstanding display of talent from students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 5!  Thank you to all the volunteers who organized, supervised, and contributed to the evening’s success!
“Once Upon a Mattress” Recap
The whole school enjoyed watching the 5th graders sing, dance, and act their hearts out in the musical “Once Upon a Mattress” on Tuesday and Wednesday.  We even heard students discussing which parts they would play when they finally reached 5th grade!  Thank you to Mr. Haywood, the 5th Grade Team, the many parent volunteers, and everyone else who helped contribute to the show’s success!
Creative Arts & Sciences - Community Concert
Come celebrate the global music experience that Bowen students (and you!) enjoyed this fall. Crocodile River Music, the Creative Arts & Sciences' Concert Series performer that you overwhelmingly loved, is bringing the music of Mali, Brazil, Spain and Trinidad, and the instruments and dances that celebrate these cultures to Newton. Join musicians from Bamako, Mali and Boston, Massachusetts for an evening of world class entertainment at Newton South High School. Complimentary wine, beer, and light fare will be provided and included in the price of a ticket. Discounted tickets ($20/each) are available to NPS employees and their families and friends - but only the adults, no one under 21 will be admitted. All proceeds to benefit Newton’s Creative Arts & Sciences programming during the 2016-17 school year.
