Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  We don’t know about you, but we are IGNORING the weather forecasts that are implying far-from-springlike weather for the first day of spring!  We’d rather focus on the appearance of shorts, t-shirts, and sandals that naturally accompany the increased hours of daylight!  It’s been a busy week around here as the 5th graders prepare for their musical performances next week AND the entire Bowen community prepares for tonight’s International Potluck Dinner.  We definitely enjoy the energy and excitement!  Thank you for everything you do to help make Bowen a great place to be.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

International Potluck Dinner - TONIGHT!!!
We look forward to seeing everyone at the International Potluck dinner tonight at 6:00 p.m.!  Please remember to bring the dish ingredient sheet that was on the back of the flyer sent home last week.  Extras will be available at the gym door if needed.  When you arrive, please bring your dish to one of 4 stations in the gym ("Asia," "Europe," "Middle East & Africa," or "The Americas"), or to teachers' lounge if it is dessert.  If you can, please wear something representative of your heritage.  Ms. Donna Mason, our librarian, will be showing an internationally-themed DVD in the library for kids and adults who are interested, and/or want some quiet time during the evening.  Dessert & coffee will be served from 7:00-7:30 p.m. in the teachers' lounge.

We have an amazing line-up of student performances in the auditorium from 7:30-8:30 p.m., including traditional dances, instrumental music, vocals, martial arts, Chinese lion dance, rhythmic gymnastics, and our first Bowen international fashion show!  We have students from all 6 grades at Bowen performing, as well as students from neighboring schools.  Don't miss it!
In the lobby, you can view the Photo Slide Show of our Bowen families' world travels, and the beautiful artwork of our 1st and 2nd graders displayed by Ms. Wenger and Ms. Lanciloti.  Also, please visit the World Map in the lobby to mark the places your family has roots or connections in.  Additionally, you can record your name and places of connection on the continent posters.

Lastly, thank you to those who have signed up to help set up and serve food.  There are still many unfilled slots where we need help so please sign up at  Thank you!

PARCC Testing Schedule
Please note that PARCC testing dates are now in the “Reminders” section with time blocks noted.  These time blocks include all testing-related tasks (instructions, distributing materials, etc.) as well as the actual block of testing time.

Bowen Baggies for Books
Please read the following note from Ms. Mason and the 5th Grade Student Council:

Dear Bowen Families,
Please help us add more books to the Bowen School Library by participating in “Bowen Baggies for Books”. The fifth grade student council will be giving out baggies to all of the Bowen students early next week. Students should fill the baggies with money! The money will be used to buy books such as Big Nate and Elephant & Piggie.  The class who donates the most money will be the class to check out the books for the first time. And there's more... if we raise over $2,000, Mrs. Mason will dye her hair crimson for the rest of the year! In addition, Mrs. Mason has agreed to go into the dunk tank at the Bowen Spring Fling if we raise over $2,500. We will collect money from March 21st through April 4th 2016.

Thank you for helping make our library a better place,
Mrs. Mason & Fifth Grade Student Council
Creative Arts & Sciences - Community Concert
Come celebrate the global music experience that Bowen students (and you!) enjoyed this fall. Crocodile River Music, the Creative Arts & Sciences' Concert Series performer that you overwhelmingly loved, is bringing the music of Mali, Brazil, Spain and Trinidad, and the instruments and dances that celebrate these cultures to Newton. Join musicians from Bamako, Mali and Boston, Massachusetts for an evening of world class entertainment at Newton South High School. Complimentary wine, beer, and light fare will be provided and included in the price of a ticket. Discounted tickets ($20/each) are available to NPS employees and their families and friends - but only the adults, no one under 21 will be admitted. All proceeds to benefit Newton’s Creative Arts & Sciences programming during the 2016-17 school year.
