February 26, 2016

Dear Bowen Families,
Happy Friday!  If 2016 wasn’t a leap year, we would be waving farewell to the month of February and welcoming March right at the start of next week.  Well, we still think we’re close enough!  It’s amazing how quickly the month flew by...and with only two snow days!  Seems like Old Man Winter decided to give us a break after last year.  Thank goodness!  Be sure and check out the calendar for March--it’s going to be a fun and busy month around Bowen with many highly-anticipated special events scheduled.  The Book Fair...BAM Night...the International Potluck Dinner...the 5th Grade Musical...there is something for everyone!  Thank you for everything you do to help make Bowen the wonderful community that it is.  Have a wonderful weekend, and we will see you on not-quite-March Monday!
Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

Bowen Science Day - Registration Forms Now Available!
Bowen’s first Science Day will take place on Sunday, April 3rd from 1-4 p.m., and the stars of the show are Bowen students!  Parent volunteers spent this past week visiting classrooms to explain the event and have the students help with an experiment.  Please ask your child about what happened! For more exciting details including project guidelines, examples, and resources, visit bowenpto.org/ScienceDay.  Registration forms are required and are due back to Bowen by Monday, March 14th (Pi Day!).  This will reserve space for your child’s project!  Forms can be completed and given to “BoBot,” our Science Day robot, who is waiting in the Bowen lobby.  Registration can also be done online at http://tinyurl.com/BowenScienceDaySignUp.  Any questions can be emailed to scienceday@bowenpto.org.  We can’t wait to see the results!

Upcoming “Responsive Home” Workshops
Mark your calendars!  Please join other Newton parents for a workshop to focus on how parents and guardians can use Responsive Classroom practices to promote positive behavior at home.  Topics will include Family Meeting, House Rules, Interactive Modeling, Positive Language, Logical Consequences, Choice, and Quiet Time.  This workshop will be taught by Amy Kelly, District Leader of Social & Emotional Learning in Newton.
There are two upcoming sessions:
Tuesday, March 15th                      6:30-8:30 p.m.
Thursday, April 7th                         6:30-8:30 p.m.
No advance registration is required.  All sessions will be held in Room 210 at the Education Center, 100 Walnut Street, in Newton.  We are looking forward to these workshops  and the opportunity to work closely with families to support our children!

Creative Arts & Sciences - Community Concert
Come celebrate the global music experience that Bowen students (and you!) enjoyed this fall. Crocodile River Music, the Creative Arts & Sciences' Concert Series performer that you overwhelmingly loved, is bringing the music of Mali, Brazil, Spain and Trinidad, and the instruments and dances that celebrate these cultures to Newton. Join musicians from Bamako, Mali and Boston, Massachusetts for an evening of world class entertainment at Newton South High School. Complimentary wine, beer and light fare will be provided and included in the price of a ticket. Discounted tickets ($20/each) are available to NPS employees and their families and friends - but only the adults, no one under 21 will be admitted. All proceeds to benefit PTO's Creative Arts & Sciences programming during the 2016-17 school year.
