December 11, 2015

__________________________________________________________________________

Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday, once again!  We’re feeling a little confused by the weather around here this week.  Who would expect that kids would be taking off their jackets while playing outside in mid-December?  We’re just so happy that the weather has been so great for spending time outdoors for recess, as we know how important it is to have the time to run around, socialize with friends, and recharge!  (That’s true for both kids AND adults, by the way.)  The December break will be here before we know it, and all of our classrooms and learning spaces will be busy, busy, busy right up to the last minute.  We love to learn!  Thank you for everything you do to help your children learn and grow, enjoy your weekend, and we will see you on Monday!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

Bowen Family STEM Day

It's never too early to bring Science & Math alive for kids!  Several elementary schools in Newton host annual invention days and/or science fairs for their students. Let's bring the same excitement to Bowen by introducing a Bowen Family STEM Day! We have initial plans, ideas, and a tentative date of March 12th or 13th.

We are looking for 6 committee members to help bring this event to life. Help us brainstorm and finalize ideas this month, and then we’ll put it into action over January and February. Kids are natural investigators and inventors: this event hopes to build on that and spark new interests!  Please reach out this week to Diane Gomez <dgomez@thinkboxsolutions.com> or Kirsten von Hassel <vonhassel@gmail.com> to join our team.  Thank you!

Village Bank Gift Drive - Last Call!

The 5th Grade Student Council is wrapping up (pun intended!) this month’s project: a holiday gift drive for families in need as part of the Village Bank Gift Drive.  They have set a goal of collecting 200 presents and have already collected 120 presents!  Gifts should be for children from newborns up through age 10.  New, unwrapped gifts will be accepted from December 4th - December 14th in the Bowen front lobby.  Thank you in advance!

Wednesday, December 23rd

This is just to clarify with everyone that December 23rd is a full day of school.  Families may have received a December menu from Whitson’s with misinformation about whether or not NPS would be in session on that day.  It has been corrected for the online lunch menu, but we want to make sure everyone is aware of this.  We’ll be ready and waiting on the 23rd!

PARCC update

By now, families of students who were in grades 3, 4, and 5 last year have received reports containing information about results from last year’s PARCC trial run.  Since last year was the first time using this assessment, as well as the first year giving a completely computer-based assessment to our students, we are taking that into account when considering if and how we can use the PARCC results to inform instruction.  Please know that teachers are constantly in the process of gathering information about students through formal and information assessments and using the results in real time to regularly adjust their teaching to better meet the needs of students.  The means that the Newton Progress Report and information shared by teachers at (and between) parent conferences will provide the most accurate picture of your child as a learner.  As referenced in Dr. Fleishman’s letter about PARCC, we will be participating in the PARCC test again this year.  Next year, Massachusetts will be developing a new assessment system and discontinuing the use of PARCC.  If you have further questions, please feel free to contact Diana or Tiffany.

“Festivals of Light” Display

Our ELL team is working to create a Bowen display of “festivals of light” throughout the world, and they would like your help!  Please send in pictures, artifacts, and/or written explanations of the different celebrations involving lights with your children.  They can bring them to the ELL Room, and the teachers will make sure they are added to the display.  The goal is for everyone to learn and share about the different ways that people bring more light into the world.  Thanks in advance!

A Message from the Bowen Library

The deadline for the Support our School Library program is December 21st!  New holiday books have been added to the list.  Please consider donating a book or a dollar amount towards purchasing books to support the Bowen Library.

Contributions can be made in two ways:
1. Select specific titles from the school wish list. Donor nameplates can be customized and inserted in each book selected.
2. Contribute a specific dollar amount and Bound to Stay Bound will select titles from the wish list to fulfill the amount.
