Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  Today marks Day 58, which means that we’re just under a third of the way through the school year.  Believe it or not!  We’re pretty sure our Kindergarten and 1st grade classes already knew that, but we’re definitely on the “can’t quite believe it” side of things.  How did we already get past Thanksgiving?  That’s just a sign of how busy and productive things are around here--we don’t even notice the time flying by!  Thank you as always for everything you do to support your children in their learning and growth.  We hope that your weekend is as busy or not busy as you’d like it to be, and we’ll see you next week!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know
Village Bank Gift Drive
The 5th Grade Student Council has been busy planning this month’s project: a holiday gift drive for families in need as part of the Village Bank Gift Drive.  They have set a goal of collecting 200 presents!  Gifts should be for children from newborns up through age 10.  New, unwrapped gifts will be accepted from December 4th - December 14th in the Bowen front lobby.  Thank you in advance!

“Festivals of Light” Display
Our ELL team is working to create a Bowen display of “festivals of light” throughout the world, and they would like your help!  Please send in pictures, artifacts, and/or written explanations of the different celebrations involving lights with your children.  They can bring them to the ELL Room, and the teachers will make sure they are added to the display.  The goal is for everyone to learn and share about the different ways that people bring more light into the world.  Thanks in advance!

Hour of Code
The Hour of Code is returning to Bowen!  What is it?  The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.  It is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries, and it will take place during the month of December to celebrate Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-11).  We want to show that Bowen School is ready to teach students these important skills, so Ms. Dietz, our Instructional Technology Specialist, Ms. Mason, our Library Teacher, and Mr. McBride, our Math Coach, will be working on coding/programming with all of the students this week.  We can’t wait!  Visit hourofcode.com for more details and links to additional activites.

Bowen Community Notifications & Privacy
On occasion, there have been times where we have had to notify the Bowen community via School Messenger about an occurrence or incident during the school day.  When we do so, it is so that we can reassure the community at large that all is well at school and there is no cause for general concern.  Please be aware that if something happens that involves the need for ambulance, fire, or police vehicles to arrive at school, Bowen staff members are in immediate contact with the family of any student or students who are involved.  While we realize that there may be concern or curiosity about what happened, in order to maintain confidentiality and respect privacy we do not release additional details to anyone but those directly involved.  Thank you for your understanding about this.

A Message from the Bowen Library
The deadline for the Support our School Library program is December 21st!  New holiday books have been added to the list.  Please consider donating a book or a dollar amount towards purchasing books to support the Bowen Library.

Contributions can be made in two ways:
1. Select specific titles from the school wish list. Donor nameplates can be customized and inserted in each book selected.
2. Contribute a specific dollar amount and Bound to Stay Bound will select titles from the wish list to fulfill the amount.
To purchase a book or make a general donation click on the “make a donation” button on the top right part of the page.

Thank you very very much!  Mrs. Mason

Staffing Updates
  • Carole Greenfield, one of our ELL Teachers, will be splitting her time between Bowen and Williams for the rest of this school year.  Carole will be at Bowen on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
