Dear Bowen Families,
Happy Friday!  What a pleasant surprise to have this morning’s drizzly gloom transform into a sunny blue sky!  With any luck, that’s a sign of the kind of weekend we can expect.  (Maybe not quite as warm as today, but we’re still doing pretty well for late November!)  Our guess is that many families will be very busy this weekend with preparations for the Thanksgiving holiday next week, whether your plan is to cook a big meal, host guests, or travel to visit family and friends.  We hope that amidst all the hustle and bustle, you still find time to relax and enjoy time together before our short (but busy!) upcoming week.  Thank you for everything you do to support your children and to help make Bowen the great community that it is!
Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany
News You Need to Know
Back Parking Lot
Some cars have recently been observed using the back parking lot as a cut-through to Langley Path.  The back driveway that leads from the Upper Field to Bowen is there to facilitate city and emergency vehicles and is not meant for general traffic.  Many Bowen students walk down to school from Langley Path, so it is truly a safety issue for vehicles to be traveling through.  Thank you for your attention to this!
Responsive Classroom Nuts & Bolts
At Bowen’s Curriculum Night, families heard about the “Responsive Classroom” approach that has been adopted schoolwide here at Bowen.  Through our newsletters, we would like to continue sharing more information over the course of the year about this approach and its benefits for our school community.
Most elementary school teachers have the opportunity to teach different grade levels during the course of their career.  One of the first things teachers do when approaching a new grade level is to find out “what 5th graders are like” or “what kinds of things are important to 2nd graders.” The Responsive Classroom believes it is important to have an understanding of the positive developmental attributes generally present in children at different ages in order to help them succeed and has published a number of articles describing the common emotional, social, physical, and cognitive characteristics that are often found in a certain age group.  This information is very interesting and can be extremely helpful in understanding how different age groups “approach the world.”

Village Bank Gift Drive...Coming Soon!
More information will be coming soon, courtesy of the 5th Grade Student Council!  However, for all you avid holiday shoppers out there, if you happen to stumble upon some great Black Friday deals, we will be collecting holiday gifts from December 4th through 14th for the Village Bank Gift Drive.  Thanks in advance!
Celebrate National Picture Book Month!
Did you know that November is National Picture Book Month?  Would you like to donate a book to the Bowen library in honor of your child, a teacher or other staff member, or someone special?  You can!  Special library-bound books can be purchased from “Bound to Stay Bound” and sent directly to the school.  They can even add a bookplate to the book!  The deadline for this program is December 12th, and the donated books will be available for checkout in January.  Trust us...students LOVE new books!  The website is:  Ms. Mason appreciates all your support!
