Dear Bowen Families,

Happy Friday!  The hustle and bustle of conferences has made yet another week just seem to fly by for all of us here at Bowen.  Even though the official window for conferences is closing, we don’t really believe that it will be any less busy around here!  The unusually-warm weather aside, it’s  November, it’s Day 41 of school, and all of our classrooms are deep into the business of learning, teaching, and growing.  Those endeavors will certainly keep everyone hopping!  We appreciate everything you continue to do for your children to help them be happy, successful students and learners.  Have a wonderful weekend, bid “adieu” to the warm weather, and we will be ready to see you again next week!
Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know
Celebrate National Picture Book Month!
Did you know that November is National Picture Book Month?  Would you like to donate a book to the Bowen library in honor of your child, a teacher or other staff member, or someone special?  You can!  Special library-bound books can be purchased from “Bound to Stay Bound” and sent directly to the school.  They can even add a bookplate to the book!  The deadline for this program is December 12th, and the donated books will be available for checkout in January.  Trust us...students LOVE new books!  The website is: www.btsb.com/sosl/bowenschoollibrary4.  Ms. Mason appreciates all your support!

Bowen School Council Election Results
We are pleased to announce that the two newest members of the Bowen School Council are Nancy Ferrari and Mark MacDonald.  Congratulations Nancy and Mark, and thanks to everyone for running.  Please remember:  Bowen School Council meetings are public and open, so please consider coming to the meetings— we know everyone has valuable contributions to make!

CPFP Workshop - Grandparents
Please see the attached flyer from the Community Partnerships for Children and Families about an upcoming workshop focused on grandparents who are raising or helping to raise their grandchildren.  For more information, contact Beverly Mobilia at 617-559-2062 or beverly_mobilia@newton.k12.ma.us

Results of the Halloween Candy Drive
Basically, it was a big success!  Bowen collected 198 pounds of candy over two days--they needed five large bins to carry it all away!  The Wellesley Dental Group will pack it up along with donations from other schools and have it sent to overseas troops.  Our students should be very proud of their generosity!

Responsive Classroom Nuts & Bolts
At Bowen’s Curriculum Night, families heard about the “Responsive Classroom” approach that has been adopted schoolwide here at Bowen.  Through our newsletters, we would like to continue sharing more information over the course of the year about this approach and its benefits for our school community.

Morning Meeting
Classrooms begin the school day with a daily Morning Meeting, which is a time for all classroom members - grown-ups and students alike - to gather together as a community.  Morning Meeting sets a tone for respectful and engaged learning in a climate of trust, builds and enhances connections among students and between students and teachers, merges academic, social, and emotional learning, and motivates students by addressing the human need to feel a sense of significance and belonging, as well as to have fun.

Morning Meeting consists of four distinct components: greeting, sharing, group activity, and morning message. These different components provide structured opportunities for students to practice skills such as greeting, listening and responding, group problem-solving, and noticing and anticipating.  As you can see, Morning Meeting is a very important part of each child’s learning experience!
