Dear Bowen Families,

We can hardly believe it!  After all the interruptions during the month of February, we have been able to wrap up the month with an actual FIVE DAY WEEK!  Even though everyone loves to have some free, unscheduled time, it has been wonderful to get back into the routines and structures of “school life” and settle bank into the business of learning.  As we turn the calendar page and head into March, we are all looking forward to a solid chunk of instructional time with our students.  Lots and lots will get done, and we can’t wait to see it happen!  Thank you for everything you do each and every day to help your children learn and grow, and we hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Yours truly,
Diana & Tiffany

News You Need to Know

“Responsive Home” Informational Session
Mark your calendars!  Please join other parents from Mason-Rice, Angier, Ward, and Zervas on Thursday, March 19th at 7:00 p.m. at Mason Rice for an evening to focus on how parents and guardians can use Responsive Classroom practices at home.  Responsive Classroom is an approach to teaching and learning that is centered on the foundation that a social curriculum is just as important as the academic curriculum.  An important goal of Responsive Classroom is to create a school climate that is kind, safe, respectful, and predictable.  Amy Kelly, District Leader of Social & Emotional Learning, will discuss ways that families can use the same language and practices of Responsive Classroom to create a cohesive, unified experience for children, as well as to tackle common home-life challenges.  We are looking forward to this evening and the opportunity to work closely with families to support our children!

Crossing Guard Morning Hours
This is just a reminder that Marcia, our crossing guard in front of the school, is at her post until 8:35 a.m. and that students arriving after that time will have to cross Cypress Street without her assistance.  8:35 a.m. is when the tardy bell rings, so the expectation is that students will be inside Bowen before that time.  Thanks for your help with this!

Bowen School Council - Working Groups
Based on the Bowen Survey feedback, the Bowen School Council has identified overarching themes on which to focus their efforts over the next few months.  Our three main areas of focus are “Communication with Administration,” “Transition to Middle School,” and “Teacher Hiring, Evaluation, and Retention.”  We would like to invite interested parents to participate in these subcommittees and help us make Bowen an even better place to be!  All three working groups will meet on Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:30 a.m. and welcome all interested participants.  Can’t make this meeting?  Suggestions and/or indication of your interest in this topic can also be submitted via e-mail to Diana (diana_guzzi@newton.k12.ma.us) or Tiffany (tiffany_back@newton.k12.ma.us).  Thank you!

Progress Reports
Progress reports for all students were made available online for parents/guardians at the beginning of February.  If you have not been able to access the progress report, please contact your child’s teacher to let them know.

Bowen Book Fair
We want all students to have a wonderful experience at the Bowen Book Fair on Wednesday, March 11th!  If you want your child to be able to purchase a book and are unable to do so due to financial hardship, please contact Diana to make arrangements.

Sidewalks and Safety
We know all too well that this winter (ok, pretty much just the entire month of February) has been a tough one for snow and ice.  There have been times when sidewalks have been impassable and the only option was to walk in the street.  Now that some time has passed and much more clearing has taken place, please remind your children that the sidewalk is the safest place to be walking.  Many streets around Bowen are still significantly narrowed due to snowbanks, so being in the street with moving traffic is extremely unsafe.  Thank you for your help with this!

PARCC, NAEP, & MCAS Testing Dates
Since we’re quickly approaching this time of year, just a quick reminder about testing dates.  If you have any flexibility in scheduling appointments, please try to avoid the testing windows in order to simplify makeup dates.

Grade 3 ELA PARCC: 3/23; 3/25; 3/26; 5/12
Grade 3 Math PARCC: 4/9; 4/10; 5/19
Grade 4 NAEP: 3/4
Grade 4 ELA PARCC: 3/23; 3/26; 3/27; 5/13
