Dear Families,

This week finally felt like fall! We were fortunate to get some time outside after a rainy start to the week. ~Students are working on being kind to one another throughout the day and following teacher directions.

  • No School, Friday, November 10, 2017-Veterans Day
The book fair is next week! We will visit for a preview on Monday, and return to the book fair on Wednesday at 9:40 to purchase books.~**Feel free to join our class in the library to help your child purchase books. ~If you are unable to attend, but would like your child to purchase books, please send them in with their $ in a sealed envelope with their name and “Room 231” written on it.

Wednesday, November 22nd is a 12:00pm release.

Friday, December 1st will be our Integrating the Arts morning. Plan to join Ms. E. in the auditorium at 8:30, and then join us in the classroom at 8:45.

Please take a minute to fill out the quick survey, if you have already done so, we really appreciate it. Thank you!

3 Things Learned:
Bonus letters-We began Unit 4 in Fundations, which introduced us to the idea of bonus letters. When a word ends in~f, l, s,~and sometimes~z~and has a short vowel, we double the~f, l,s,~or~z.~Examples of words with bonus letters are kiss, puff, bell, fuzz, off, mass.

Solving story problems-On Monday and Wednesday, we learned how to read and solve addition and subtraction story problems. ~Students identified the unit (what the story problem is about), drew a picture, and wrote a number model to demonstrate how they solved each problem.

Story elements-During Reader's Workshop, we learned about retelling stories. Students identified characters, setting, problem, and solution in~Harry the Dirty Dog, Bear Feels Scared,~and~Miss Rumphius. ~We will continue our retelling work next week!

2 Questions to Ask Your First Grader:
What do you know about Veterans' Day? (We spent time Thursday afternoon learning about who veterans are and why we honor and remember them each year.)

Who are the characters in~Bear Feels Scared? (We have read several books about bear this year, and focused on identifying and describing the characters in~Bear Feels Scared~this week.)

1 Thing to Try at Home:
Raz-Kids! Information about this fantastic online reading program came home yesterday, along with your child's login and password. ~Your first grader can use Raz-Kids on an IPad or computer to read books at their reading level, listen to stories read aloud, and answer questions after reading. ~This is a great way to practice reading skills! You may notice the books your child is assigned may seem "easy" at first. ~This is to allow them to build their confidence and get comfortable with the program. We will use Raz in the classroom soon!

Have a wonderful long weekend. See you on Monday!
