Evaluation for special education
* If your child is having difficulty acquiring a skill and/or her behavior/emotion are interfering with her performance, and interventions (see intervention page) have been tried, then her teacher may recommend an evaluation for special education. As a parent/guardian, you may also request an evaluation.
* What does an evaluation entail?
* Individual assessments, outside of the classroom, to evaluate one or more of the following
* Learning style
* Behavior/emotion
* Academic performance
* Language processing
* Fine Motor
* Gross motor
* Developmental and social history
* What is the purpose of the evaluation?
* To answer the referral question
* Determine if your child has a specific disability
* If she does not, then to determine what other regular education interventions can be put into place
* If she does, then to determine if she is making effective progress
* If she is not, then to develop an individual education plan (IEP) with specific goals and benchmarks
* If she is, then to determine if specific accommodations would assist her
* How will the results be communicated to me and my child?
* Parents/guardians will receive written reports 2 days prior to a meeting
* At the meeting, the results will be summarized and questions will be answered
* Results of the evaluation will then be communicated to your child in a child-friendly manner to explain
her strengths and weaknesses
